mcptoon: Instructions file for Gemini CLI

GEMINI.md

mcptoon GEMINI.md is an instructions file for Gemini CLI from activeing123/mcptoon. It costs 356 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of Gemini CLI instructions for mcptoon, a command-line tool that finds and calls Model Context Protocol servers. It can expose several configured servers through one connection and reduce the amount of tool information placed in the prompt.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure mcptoon as a Gemini CLI bridge, discover available tools, inspect their inputs, and call tools from a shell.
Why use it?
It avoids configuring every server separately and helps keep large tool descriptions and results from using unnecessary prompt space. It also explains when to inspect a tool's full details.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00356 $0.00356
Opus 5.5 $0.00142 $0.00142
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00071 $0.00071
Haiku 4.5 $0.00036 $0.00036

Security

Grade A, and why

mcptoon GEMINI.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

mcptoon for Gemini CLI

mcptoon is a zero-dependency Python CLI that manages and calls MCP servers with token-efficient discovery. This extension registers mcptoon serve as one stdio MCP bridge: a single connection exposes every server in your mcptoon config, so Gemini CLI does not need a separate MCP entry per server.

Prerequisites

pip install mcptoon
mcptoon discover --write # or: mcptoon add <name> --command ... --args ...

Bridge mode (this extension)

Servers from ~/.mcptoon/config.json appear as tools on one MCP server (server-prefixed names). Per-tool output compression is configurable: mcptoon policy <server> <tool> toon|slim|raw.

CLI mode (shell, zero injected schemas)

From a shell tool, mcptoon keeps full tool schemas out of the prompt entirely; discovery costs a compact name index instead of JSON schemas:

mcptoon manifest # compact tool index across all servers
mcptoon inspect <server> <tool> # full schema, on demand
mcptoon call <server> <tool> '{"k":"v"}'
mcptoon call --auto <tool> ... # auto-find the server

Notes

  • The first tools/list on the bridge pre-warms every configured server; with slow npx-based servers this can take tens of seconds. CLI mode has no such up-front cost.
  • Config lives at ~/.mcptoon/config.json; docs and releases: https://github.com/activeing123/mcptoon
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
