SetlistMCP CLAUDE.md

SetlistMCP CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from adrianparker/SetlistMCP. It costs 1,447 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository instruction file for SetlistMCP, an MCP server that lets Claude search concert setlists from setlist.fm. It documents the project’s architecture and coding rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing or maintaining SetlistMCP, including its logging, configuration, environment loading, and path-handling conventions.
Why use it?
It prevents common integration errors, especially accidentally writing log text to stdout, which would interfere with the MCP protocol messages.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.01447 $0.01447
Opus 5 $0.00724 $0.00724
Sonnet 5 $0.00289 $0.00289
Haiku 4.5 $0.00145 $0.00145

Measured 4d ago against content hash 4b419d536b4a, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

SetlistMCP CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 124 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

setlist-mcp

An MCP server exposing setlist.fm search to Claude, for looking up setlists from gigs Adrian has been to.

This file is the standing context for Claude Code sessions in this repo — keep it current as the project evolves instead of letting it drift out of sync.

The rule that breaks everything if forgotten

stdout is the JSON-RPC channel. This server speaks MCP over stdio, and the host parses every line of stdout as a protocol message. One stray line — from your code or from a dependency — breaks the connection, and the symptom is an unhelpful SyntaxError from the host quoting the offending character.

So:

  • Never console.log in src/. Use the injected logger, or console.error.
  • The winston console transport is configured with stderrLevels covering every level (see src/logger.js), driven by consoleToStderr in src/config/*.json. Don't remove that.
  • dotenv.config() must keep quiet: true — dotenv prints an "injected env" banner to stdout otherwise. This is verified: it writes 76 bytes to stdout, 0 to stderr.
  • Paths resolve against import.meta.dirname, never the cwd. An MCP client spawns the server from its own working directory.

Stack

  • Node.js 22+ (ESM, "type": "module"), no bundler or TS build step
  • @modelcontextprotocol/server v2 (pinned to 2.0.0) + zod v4 for schemas
  • Mocha + Chai + Sinon for tests, c8 for coverage
  • ESLint (neostandard) — no semicolons
  • npm (not yarn/pnpm)

Architecture

src/index.js entry point: dotenv, serveStdio, signals
src/server.js         createDependencies() + createServer()
src/tools/ one module per tool, plus shared result helpers
src/services/ API clients and the primitives they sit on

createDependencies() is called once, outside the serveStdio factory. serveStdio invokes its factory per connection, so building rate limiters inside it would reset them on every client reconnect and double the outbound request rate.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
