ECC: Instructions file for Kiro

.kiro/steering/coding-style.md

coding-style is an instructions file for Kiro from affaan-m/ECC. It costs 348 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of general coding rules covering immutable data, file structure, error handling, input validation, and readable code. Immutable data is replaced with a new value rather than changed in place.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding everyday implementation and code review, especially when splitting large modules, validating inputs, and reporting errors clearly.
Why use it?
It helps prevent hidden side effects, swallowed errors, confusing structure, and unsafe handling of external data.

About the project

ECC is a toolkit that organizes and improves how coding agents work through skills, memory, security checks, research practices, and related extensions. It is for developers using agents such as Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, and Cursor.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00348 $0.00348
Opus 5.5 $0.00139 $0.00139
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00070 $0.00070
Haiku 4.5 $0.00035 $0.00035

Security

Grade A, and why

coding-style scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 12d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Coding Style

Immutability (CRITICAL)

ALWAYS create new objects, NEVER mutate existing ones:

// Pseudocode
WRONG: modify(original, field, value) → changes original in-place
CORRECT: update(original, field, value) → returns new copy with change

Rationale: Immutable data prevents hidden side effects, makes debugging easier, and enables safe concurrency.

File Organization

MANY SMALL FILES > FEW LARGE FILES:

  • High cohesion, low coupling
  • 200-400 lines typical, 800 max
  • Extract utilities from large modules
  • Organize by feature/domain, not by type

Error Handling

ALWAYS handle errors comprehensively:

  • Handle errors explicitly at every level
  • Provide user-friendly error messages in UI-facing code
  • Log detailed error context on the server side
  • Never silently swallow errors

Input Validation

ALWAYS validate at system boundaries:

  • Validate all user input before processing
  • Use schema-based validation where available
  • Fail fast with clear error messages
  • Never trust external data (API responses, user input, file content)

Code Quality Checklist

Before marking work complete:

  • Code is readable and well-named
  • Functions are small (<50 lines)
  • Files are focused (<800 lines)
  • No deep nesting (>4 levels)
  • Proper error handling
  • No hardcoded values (use constants or config)
  • No mutation (immutable patterns used)
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
