actual-mcp-server: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/integration-tests.instructions.md

actual-mcp-server integration-tests.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from agigante80/actual-mcp-server. It costs 405 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of rules for writing manual integration tests for an MCP server, a service that lets software call tools through a standard interface.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when editing manual tests in tests/manual/tests/. It covers checks such as creating or updating records, reading them back, testing invalid UUIDs, and running tests at increasing levels from sanity to cleanup.
Why use it?
It gives developers consistent requirements for test size, error handling, test data, negative cases, and checking that changes were saved. These tests need a live server and are not meant for a default temporary environment.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00405 $0.00405
Opus 5 $0.00202 $0.00202
Sonnet 5 $0.00081 $0.00081
Haiku 4.5 $0.00040 $0.00040

Measured 8d ago against content hash f3f1729466b8, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

actual-mcp-server integration-tests.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Rules for manual integration test files (tests/manual/tests/)

Read tests/manual/README.md Technical Guidelines before editing any file here.

These tests require a live MCP server at http://localhost:3601/http. They cannot run in Copilot's default ephemeral environment, but CAN run if the issue specifies a live target environment.

Test levels (cascade upward): sanitysmokenormalextendedfullcleanup

Key rules:

  • Hard limit: 400 lines per file — evaluate splitting before hitting 300
  • Each file exports exactly one primary function: fooTests(client, context)
  • Always use client.callTool('tool_name', {...}) — never call fetch() directly
  • Wrap every check in try/catch; log / / but only rethrow fatal errors
  • Read-back verification: after every create/update, re-fetch and assert the change is visible
  • Test data naming: MCP-{Type}-{TS} (e.g. MCP-Account-2026-03-03T14-30-22-456Z)
  • Every tool that accepts a UUID must have a negative test using '00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000'
  • Error messages must be actionable. See the error-message scenario table, tracked by issue #206.
  • Never add shared mutable state outside the context object
  • Cleanup is automatic: test runner prompts for cleanup at end, or pass yes as 4th argument
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
