M3E: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

M3E copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from akaghef/M3E. It costs 1,308 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for coding agents working on the M3E project, a React and TypeScript browser application with a Node.js server. It defines project areas, branch assignments, and how changes must be integrated.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when implementing, reviewing, or integrating M3E changes across the visual, data, collaboration, and management areas.
Why use it?
It gives agents project-specific rules so they work in the correct environment and branch instead of changing stable code or overlapping with other contributors.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is akaghef/M3E's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on M3E itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything M3E configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01308 $0.01308
Opus 5.5 $0.00523 $0.00523
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00262 $0.00262
Haiku 4.5 $0.00131 $0.00131

Security

Grade A, and why

M3E copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Copilot Agent Instructions — M3E

Project Overview

M3E is a local-first research thinking support tool built with React + TypeScript (browser) and Node.js (server). Two environments exist: beta/ (active development) and final/ (stable release). Active development happens in beta/. Do not modify final/ unless explicitly instructed.

Full project specs are in docs/. Read relevant specs before starting implementation.

Agent Roles and Branch Assignment

Role Branch Scope
visual dev-visual Rendering layer, SVG/canvas, visual styles, CSS, layout
data dev-data Model layer, Controller, ViewState, SQLite, Command pattern
data2 dev-data2 Parallel worker for the data role
team dev-team Collaboration / Cloud Sync
manage dev-beta Merge, specs, task management, Final migration
akaghef — Review and direction

Each agent must only commit to its assigned branch. When in doubt about scope boundary, stop and ask akaghef.

Mandatory Integration Cycle

  1. Subordinate roles (visual / data / data2 / team) push their work to their role branch (dev-visual / dev-data / dev-data2 / dev-team).
  2. manage merges those changes into dev-beta.
  3. Before starting the next task, subordinate roles must rebase onto latest origin/dev-beta.
  4. Do not continue implementation if your branch is not rebased to current dev-beta.

Permitted Operations (No Confirmation Needed)

All operations are permitted autonomously except those listed below. Proceed without asking for confirmation unless the operation falls into the restricted list.

Session Start Protocol

Enforce this protocol once at session start, then continue normally without re-reading full instructions each step.

  1. Run /setrole <role> first (one of visual / data / data2 / team / manage).
  2. Confirm role and assigned branch.
  3. Run git branch --show-current and verify branch alignment.
  4. Confirm worktree/directory alignment.
  5. Confirm writable ownership for docs in this cycle.
  6. For subordinate roles, before new implementation work, run sync check and rebase against latest origin/dev-beta.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
