herdr-sidebar: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

herdr-sidebar AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from alexarthurs/herdr-sidebar. It costs 27,324 tokens per session, scanned C, original, MIT.

A project instruction file for herdr-sidebar, a Rust terminal sidebar plugin, covering its monorepo, which is one repository containing related projects, plus build, test, lint, development, Windows, and release guidance.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when changing the herdr-sidebar plugin, running its checks, working on Windows, or preparing a release and its documentation updates.
Why use it?
It gives coding agents project-specific rules and records fixes for non-obvious build problems, Windows differences, and manifest issues. This reduces repeated investigation and keeps useful findings with the code.

Instructions file for CodexOpenCode

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: reads .claude/ paths; mentions Claude Code; reads ~/.codex paths.

This is alexarthurs/herdr-sidebar's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on herdr-sidebar itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything herdr-sidebar configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.27324 $0.27324
Opus 5.5 $0.10930 $0.10930
Sonnet 5.5 $0.05465 $0.05465
Haiku 4.5 $0.02732 $0.02732

Security

Grade C, and why

herdr-sidebar AGENTS.md scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 28d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

herdr-sidebar monorepo

This file is a living doc — always capture findings. Whenever you discover something non-obvious the hard way (a herdr behavior, a Windows quirk, a manifest gotcha, a build issue), record it here in the relevant section before finishing the task, the way the Windows caveats below were captured. If you're working in a feature worktree, commit the AGENTS.md update on your branch so it lands on main with the merge.

One herdr plugin, a VS Code-style sidebar for the terminal, as a self-contained Rust crate:

  • plugins/herdr-sidebar — file explorer + source control in ONE binary (ratatui TUI). Unified mode shows both views in a single "Sidebar" pane with an activity-bar switcher (in-process, instant); the ⚙ settings can split them into separate Explorer / Source Control panes (--view explorer|git pins a pane's starting view). --preview runs the file-preview pane. Views live in src/explorer_app.rs / src/scm_app.rs (bin modules); shared pieces (icons, ipc, launch parsing, state, ui helpers, git plumbing + gitdeco decorations) are lib modules — nothing is copy-mirrored anymore.

There is deliberately no root cargo workspace: herdr plugin install <owner>/<repo>/<subdir> treats the subdirectory as the plugin root, and each plugin's herdr-plugin.toml points at ./target/release/<bin> — a shared workspace would hoist target/ to the repo root and break that path. Keep every crate buildable standalone from its own directory.

Build / test / lint

Run from inside the plugin directory, not the repo root:

cd plugins/herdr-sidebar
cargo build --release
cargo test
cargo clippy -- -D warnings

CI uses the LATEST stable toolchain (dtolnay/rust-toolchain@stable), so a stale local stable can pass clippy while CI fails on a newly deprecated API (v0.15.1: fetch_update → try_update, which is also newer than our rust-version = 1.89 MSRV — rewrite instead of renaming). Run rustup update stable (or cargo +<latest> clippy) before tagging a release.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
