altmetric-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

altmetric-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from altmetric/altmetric-mcp. It costs 3,289 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for an MCP server that retrieves research-impact data through Altmetric APIs. Altmetric tracks attention and citations around research outputs such as papers.

In plain words
What is it for?
Working on the server, using its Details Page API for individual research records, and using its Explorer API to search and analyse an organisation's research.
Why use it?
They explain how to develop, test, run, and publish the server instead of making agents infer the project's conventions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.03289 $0.03289
Opus 5 $0.01644 $0.01644
Sonnet 5 $0.00658 $0.00658
Haiku 4.5 $0.00329 $0.00329

Security

Grade A, and why

altmetric-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Instructions

This file provides guidance to AI agents when working with code in this repository.

Project Overview

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides AI agents with access to both the Altmetric Details Page API and Explorer API for retrieving citation metrics and research output data. Built using the @modelcontextprotocol/sdk, it uses stdio transport for communication with MCP clients like Claude Desktop.

The server integrates two different Altmetric APIs:

  1. Details Page API - Public API for citation counts and details by identifier (DOI, PubMed ID, etc.)
  2. Explorer API - Institutional API for searching and analyzing research outputs in your organization

Commands

Development

  • npm run dev - Run server in development mode with auto-reload (using node --watch)
  • npm start - Run server in production mode
  • npm test - Run all tests using Mocha

Publishing New Versions

To release a new version:

  1. Bump the version. Edit it in package.json and server.json (which has it twice - top-level version and packages[0].version), then sync the lockfile:

    npm install --package-lock-only

This rewrites package-lock.json's two version fields from package.json automatically - do not hand-edit the lockfile. All four version fields must match or publish.sh aborts the release; forgetting package-lock.json is an easy, recurring miss, which is exactly why the check (and this step) exist.

  2. Commit the version bump:

    git add package.json server.json package-lock.json
git commit -m "Bump version to X.Y.Z"

  3. Push to remote:

    git push origin main

  4. Run the publish script:

    ./publish.sh

    The script will:

    • ✅ Verify you're on main and synced with remote
    • ✅ Check version consistency across files
    • ✅ Run all tests
    • ✅ Create git tag (e.g., v0.2.0)
    • ✅ Prompt to push tag to GitHub
    • ✅ Prompt to publish to npm
    • ✅ Prompt to publish to MCP Registry

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
