CLAUDE.md

coinmarket-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from anjor/coinmarket-mcp-server. It costs 524 tokens per session, scanned C, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for a server that gives AI assistants cryptocurrency listings and price quotes through the CoinMarketCap API. MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is a standard way for assistants to access tools and data.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when modifying the Python MCP server, its CoinMarketCap integration, cryptocurrency resources, or listing and quote tools.
Why use it?
They explain the project structure, authentication, data resources, and development commands so changes fit the existing server design.

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Opus 5 $0.00262 $0.00262

Security

Grade C, and why

coinmarket-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 11d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Project Overview

This is a Coinmarket MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server that provides cryptocurrency data from the CoinMarketCap API. The server implements the MCP specification to allow AI assistants to access cryptocurrency listings and quotes.

Architecture

  • MCP Server: Built using the mcp Python library, communicates via stdin/stdout
  • API Integration: Interfaces with CoinMarketCap Pro API for cryptocurrency data
  • Resource System: Exposes cryptocurrency data as resources with coinmarket:// URI scheme
  • Tool System: Provides two tools for getting listings and quotes

Key Components

  • src/coinmarket_service/server.py: Main MCP server implementation with:
    • Resource handlers for cryptocurrency listings and quotes
    • Tool handlers for get_currency_listings and get_quotes
    • API key authentication and request handling
  • src/coinmarket_service/__init__.py: Package entry point that runs the async server

Development Commands

Setup and Installation

# Install uv package manager (if not already installed)
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

# Install dependencies
uv sync

# Run the server
uv run coinmarket_service

Docker

# Build Docker image
docker build -t coinmarket-service .

# Run with Docker
docker run -e COINMARKET_API_KEY=your_api_key_here coinmarket-service

Linting

# Run ruff linter
uv run ruff check
uv run ruff format

Configuration

  • Requires COINMARKET_API_KEY environment variable
  • Uses .env file support via python-dotenv
  • Configuration for Claude Desktop requires absolute path to repository

MCP Server Details

The server implements:

  • Resources:
    • coinmarket://cryptocurrency/listings - Latest cryptocurrency listings
    • coinmarket://cryptocurrency/quotes - Cryptocurrency quotes (supports slug/symbol query params)
  • Tools:
    • get_currency_listings - No parameters required
    • get_quotes - Optional slug or symbol parameters

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
