aptible-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

aptible-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from aptible/aptible-mcp. It costs 808 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of Claude Code instructions for working on an Aptible API integration. Aptible is a platform whose API lets software manage its hosted resources.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for starting the application, running tests, linting, formatting, type checking, and supplying an Aptible API token during development.
Why use it?
It gives an agent the project's overview, commands, authentication requirements, and checks needed to work on the codebase correctly.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00808 $0.00808
Opus 5 $0.00404 $0.00404
Sonnet 5 $0.00162 $0.00162
Haiku 4.5 $0.00081 $0.00081

Measured 7d ago against content hash 4297b7bf7fab, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

aptible-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

Aptible MCP is a Mission Control Protocol (MCP) integration for interacting with the Aptible API. It provides a standardized way to manage Aptible resources using Pydantic models and consistent CRUD operations.

Common Commands

Running the Application

# Start the MCP server
python main.py

Development Commands

# Run tests
just test

# Run a single test file
APTIBLE_TOKEN="foobar" APTIBLE_API_ROOT_URL="http://localhost:3000" APTIBLE_AUTH_ROOT_URL="http://localhost:3001" python -m pytest -v -s tests/test_file.py

# Run linting
just lint

# Format code and sort dependencies
just pretty

# Run type checking
just typecheck

Authentication

The application requires an Aptible API token for authentication. The token is sourced in the following order:

  1. From the APTIBLE_TOKEN environment variable
  2. From a local tokens file at ~/.aptible/tokens.json

When running locally, make sure to either:

  • Set the APTIBLE_TOKEN environment variable
  • Have a valid token in the tokens file (requires logging in with the Aptible CLI first)

Architecture

Core Components

  1. MCP Server (main.py)

    • Creates and initializes a FastMCP server
    • Registers tool functions that correspond to API operations
    • Handles the communication protocol
  2. API Client (api_client.py)

    • Manages authentication with the Aptible API
    • Provides methods for making HTTP requests (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE)
    • Handles response parsing and error handling
  3. Resource Models (models/)

    • Base models and resource managers (models/base.py)
    • Resource-specific models and operations for:
      • Accounts (models/account.py)
      • Apps (models/app.py)
      • Databases (models/database.py)
      • Stacks (models/stack.py)
      • VHosts (models/vhost.py)

Data Flow

  1. MCP server receives a command from the client
  2. The appropriate tool function is invoked
  3. The tool function calls methods on the resource manager
  4. The resource manager uses the API client to make requests
  5. Responses are parsed into Pydantic models
  6. Results are returned to the client

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
