bring-mcp-server: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

bring-mcp-server AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from arithmetic-zz/bring-mcp-server. It costs 1,357 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository guide for a Python MCP server, covering its files, setup, build and test commands, coding rules, and release process. MCP is a protocol that lets an AI client call tools provided by a server.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing, testing, packaging, or reviewing changes to the Bring server.
Why use it?
It gives contributors the project's working rules and commands in one place instead of requiring them to infer them from the codebase.

Written for Codex and OpenCode: the file is AGENTS.md.

This is arithmetic-zz/bring-mcp-server's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on bring-mcp-server itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything bring-mcp-server configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01357 $0.01357
Opus 5.5 $0.00543 $0.00543
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00271 $0.00271
Haiku 4.5 $0.00136 $0.00136

Measured 2d ago against content hash 58e4073e240a, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

bring-mcp-server AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repository Guidelines

Project Structure & Module Organization

  • server.py contains the async stdio MCP server, Bring! client lifecycle, tool dispatch, resources, and prompts.
  • tests/test_server.py contains unit tests and fake Bring clients/sessions.
  • tests/test_mcp_protocol.py exercises MCP validation and responses through an in-memory client/server connection with mocked Bring access.
  • requirements.txt lists runtime dependencies; .env.example documents required credentials.
  • bring-mcp-server.spec, requirements-build.txt and scripts/ build, package and smoke-test standalone downloads; .github/workflows/release.yml publishes them after all four targets pass.
  • .github/workflows/tests.yml runs CI checks. README.md covers setup; this file is the shared contributor and agent guide.

Build, Test, and Development Commands

Use Python 3.11+ and a local virtual environment:

python3 -m venv .venv
.venv/bin/pip install -r requirements.txt
.venv/bin/python server.py

Configure credentials before starting the server. It communicates over stdio and is normally launched by an MCP client.

  • .venv/bin/python -m py_compile server.py — check source syntax.
  • .venv/bin/python -m PyInstaller --noconfirm --clean bring-mcp-server.spec — build a standalone executable after installing requirements-build.txt.
  • .venv/bin/python -m unittest discover -s tests -v — run the unit suite.
  • npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector .venv/bin/python server.py — inspect MCP tools, resources, and prompts interactively.

Coding Style & Naming Conventions

Follow existing Python style: four-space indentation, snake_case functions/variables, PascalCase classes, and uppercase module constants. Use type annotations in server code and async/await for network operations. Keep tool descriptions and user-facing messages in English. No formatter or linter is configured.

Keep logging configuration inside main() so imports do not override the test runner's logging.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
