.github/copilot-instructions.md

copilot-session-tools copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from Arithmomaniac/copilot-session-tools. It costs 1,909 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for a Python command-line and web tool that manages Copilot session data. They require running Ruff for linting and formatting, Ty for type checking, and tests affected by changes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when modifying this Python project, then run its lint, format, type, and relevant test checks before finishing.
Why use it?
They define the checks needed before completing changes and avoid waiting for the full continuous-integration run to catch basic problems.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01909 $0.01909
Opus 5.5 $0.00764 $0.00764
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00382 $0.00382
Haiku 4.5 $0.00191 $0.00191

Security

Grade A, and why

copilot-session-tools copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 27d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Copilot Instructions

This document provides instructions for GitHub Copilot when working on this repository.

Code Quality Requirements

Before completing any code changes, you MUST run the following checks and ensure they pass:

1. Linting with Ruff

Run the linter to check for code style and potential issues:

uv run ruff check .

If there are issues, you can auto-fix many of them with:

uv run ruff check . --fix

2. Format Check with Ruff

Ensure code is properly formatted:

uv run ruff format --check .

To auto-format:

uv run ruff format .

3. Type Checking with Ty

Run the type checker to ensure type safety:

uv run ty check

4. Run Affected Tests

Rather than running the full test suite, identify and run only the tests affected by your changes. The full test suite is enforced by CI on every PR.

# Map changed source files to their test files:
# src/copilot_session_tools/database.py → tests/test_database.py
# src/copilot_session_tools/scanner/ → tests/test_scanner.py
# src/copilot_session_tools/cli.py → tests/test_cli.py
# src/copilot_session_tools/web/ → tests/test_webapp.py
# src/copilot_session_tools/markdown_exporter.py → tests/test_markdown_exporter.py
# src/copilot_session_tools/html_exporter.py → tests/test_html_exporter.py

# Example: if you changed database.py and scanner/
uv run pytest tests/test_database.py tests/test_scanner.py -v

If unsure which tests are affected, run the full suite:

uv run pytest tests/ --ignore=tests/test_webapp_e2e.py -v

Workflow Summary

Before committing any changes:

  1. Run uv run ruff check . - fix any linting errors
  2. Run uv run ruff format . - format the code
  3. Run uv run ty check - fix any type errors
  4. Run uv run pytest tests/test_<affected>.py - run affected tests (CI runs the full suite)

Linting, formatting, and type checks are also enforced by a sessionEnd hook. The full test suite is enforced in CI via GitHub Actions and must pass before merging.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
