obsidian-semantic-mcp: Instructions file for Gemini CLI

GEMINI.md

obsidian-semantic-mcp GEMINI.md is an instructions file for Gemini CLI from artificemachine/obsidian-semantic-mcp. It costs 401 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Repository instructions for an MCP server that performs semantic search across Obsidian vaults. Obsidian is a note-taking application, and semantic search finds notes by meaning rather than only matching exact words.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to set up, monitor, test, and develop the Obsidian search server with the osm command, Docker Compose, and its database and embedding services.
Why use it?
They document the required Python, PostgreSQL with vector support, and Ollama services, along with project commands and rules for safely managing the database and file watcher.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00401 $0.00401
Opus 5 $0.00200 $0.00200
Sonnet 5 $0.00080 $0.00080
Haiku 4.5 $0.00040 $0.00040

Security

Grade A, and why

obsidian-semantic-mcp GEMINI.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Obsidian Semantic MCP — Gemini CLI Context

Project

Obsidian Semantic MCP is a Python-based Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides semantic search capabilities for Obsidian vaults. It uses pgvector (PostgreSQL) for vector storage and Ollama for generating embeddings.

Stack & Tools

  • Language: Python 3.10+
  • MCP Framework: mcp
  • Database: PostgreSQL with pgvector
  • Embeddings: Ollama (nomic-embed-text by default)
  • Environment: uv for dependency management, Docker Compose for services
  • CLI Commands:
    • osm init: Setup wizard (pgvector, Ollama, vault path)
    • osm dashboard: Launch monitoring dashboard
    • osm status: Check service health
    • osm tunnel: Reconnect SSH tunnel (for remote Ollama)
    • uv run pytest: Run unit and smoke tests
  • Docker: docker compose up -d to start the full stack

Operational Rules

  • osm CLI: The osm command is the primary management tool. Use --yes for non-interactive teardown.
  • DB Connection: Always use the db_conn() context manager for database access; never connect directly via psycopg2.
  • Watchdog: The _handle_upsert function must be resilient to prevent the file-watching thread from dying.
  • Indexing Gate: Search tools are gated by the _INDEXING_IN_PROGRESS flag to ensure valid results during first-boot.
  • Vault Root: Path traversal is prevented by _resolve_vault_path(); all operations are scoped to the vault root.

Workspace Conventions

  • CHANGELOG.md is append-only and required per commit.
  • Never edit .env, credentials, or secrets.
  • Use shux contract for task management.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
