mcp-gitlab CLAUDE.md

mcp-gitlab CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from atla-digital/mcp-gitlab. It costs 4,273 tokens per session, scanned A, original, from a forked repository, MIT.

A set of project instructions for an AI coding assistant working on an MCP server that connects GitLab to other software. MCP is a standard way for AI tools to call outside services.

In plain words
What is it for?
It is for developing and maintaining the GitLab integration, including compiling TypeScript, watching files, checking code style, debugging the server, and generating documentation.
Why use it?
It gives the assistant the repository’s build, testing, formatting, and documentation commands so it can work within the project’s existing process.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.04273 $0.04273
Opus 5 $0.02136 $0.02136
Sonnet 5 $0.00855 $0.00855
Haiku 4.5 $0.00427 $0.00427

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-gitlab CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Architecture Overview

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for GitLab integration built in TypeScript with Streamable HTTP as the primary transport. The server enables AI assistants to interact with GitLab repositories through a comprehensive set of tools.

Streamable HTTP Transport

The server implements the Streamable HTTP MCP transport protocol, running as an HTTP service on port 3001. This allows for:

  • Direct HTTP-based MCP communication
  • Better performance and reliability than stdio/process-based transports
  • Support for multiple concurrent clients
  • Easy deployment in containerized environments

Core Architecture

Main Entry Point: src/server/streamable-http-server.ts

  • Implements GitLabStreamableHttpServer class with HTTP transport
  • Creates axios instances with GitLab API authentication per session
  • Sets up request handlers for tools, resources, and capabilities

Tool Organization: The codebase is organized into four main functional domains:

  1. Repository Operations (src/handlers/repository-handlers.ts)
    • Projects, branches, merge requests, issues
    • File operations and branch comparisons

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
