simplenote-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

simplenote-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from Automattic/simplenote-mcp. It costs 1,789 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A repository instruction file for a TypeScript server that connects Simplenote notes to coding tools. It describes the project layout, commands, architecture, and coding rules.

In plain words
What is it for?
It guides changes to note-reading and note-writing tools, command-line setup, login, telemetry settings, server options, and connections to Simplenote’s local or web-based data.
Why use it?
It gives an agent the project’s source of truth so it can work in the right files and follow the server’s existing design.

This is Automattic/simplenote-mcp's own configuration. It tells Codex and OpenCode how to work on simplenote-mcp itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything simplenote-mcp configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01789 $0.01789
Opus 5 $0.00894 $0.00894
Sonnet 5 $0.00358 $0.00358
Haiku 4.5 $0.00179 $0.00179

Security

Grade A, and why

simplenote-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Agent Instructions

This repository is a Node.js 22+ TypeScript MCP server for Simplenote. It exposes Simplenote notes to MCP clients through either the local macOS Simplenote Core Data store or the Simperium HTTP API.

AGENTS.md is the source of truth for coding-agent guidance in this repo. CLAUDE.md should only point here.

Project Shape

  • src/server.ts is the MCP entry point and composition root. It dispatches CLI subcommands before setup, parses server startup args, resolves the active provider, wires telemetry, registers tool groups, and connects over stdio.
  • src/server-args.ts parses server startup flags such as --path. Keep runtime server options here rather than in src/cli.ts.
  • src/cli.ts implements CLI subcommands: setup, logout, and disable-telemetry.
  • src/tools/ contains MCP tool and prompt registration code:
    • common.ts defines shared registration context, annotations, and tool error formatting.
    • read.ts registers core read tools: list tags, list/search notes, and get note.
    • write.ts registers write-capability-gated tools plus the revert workflow group. get_note_history and get_note_version live here because they primarily support revert_note, but they must keep read-only MCP annotations.
    • results.ts defines tool output schemas and shared structured/text response helpers.
  • src/providers/ contains provider and persistence code:
    • resolver.ts chooses local vs. API provider from config, token, and --path.
    • native-macos.ts reads the macOS Simplenote store from disk and is always read-only.
    • simperium-api.ts talks to Simperium, supports writes when configured, and owns API cache/write-safety behavior.
    • auth.ts, config.ts, and paths.ts handle token/config files and cross-platform paths.
    • normalize.ts defines normalized provider data shapes and shared note formatting helpers.
  • src/telemetry.ts sends anonymous setup/tool-call events through Tracks. Telemetry MUST NOT include note IDs, note content, tags, search queries, Simplenote account details, or tokens.
  • tests/ mirrors source areas and uses Node's built-in test runner with tsx.
  • server.js at the repo root is a compatibility shim that imports dist/server.js; keep it stable unless intentionally changing local-checkout compatibility.
  • server.json at the repo root is the MCP Registry manifest. Its top-level version and packages[0].version must match package.json's version; see Releases.
  • dist/ is build output. Do not hand-edit it.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
