Project instructions for kmd, a command-line tool and MCP server for managing structured Markdown notes. It can validate, index, and serve a Markdown vault to AI agents.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when modifying, validating, indexing, or serving the kmd Markdown vault.
Why use it?
It gives agents the project-specific rules they need when working on kmd.

Instructions file for Claude CodeCodexOpenCode

Written for Claude Code and Codex and OpenCode: UserPromptSubmit hook event, but also the file is AGENTS.md. Also seen: mentions subagents; mentions Claude Code; mentions AGENTS.md.

This is bartolli/kmd's own configuration. It tells Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode how to work on kmd itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything kmd configures →

Needs its repository: it reads a path above its own folder, which exists only inside the repository. The line is WIKI_VAULT=../vault pnpm --filter @bartolli/kmd exec tsx bin/kmd.ts <validate|sync|config|hook …>.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01875 $0.01875
Opus 5.5 $0.00750 $0.00750
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00375 $0.00375
Haiku 4.5 $0.00187 $0.00187

Security

Grade A, and why

kmd AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 78 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

AGENTS.md — vault-infra

Tooling monorepo for the llm-wiki: the single @bartolli/kmd binary (vault → SQLite FTS5 sync, wiki-mcp stdio server, kmd hook harness gates) plus the per-harness wiki-sdd plugin adapters. The vault is a sibling repo at ../vault/; the system blueprint is ../README.md.

First read

Wiki primer at projects/llm-wiki/primer.md, loaded via the wiki MCP server's prime(scope="llm-wiki") tool. The tool prefix varies by harness and server registration name — discover it from the available tools list at session start. Without MCP tools, kmd prime llm-wiki returns the same briefing.

Wiki integration

  • WIKI_SCOPE: llm-wiki
  • WIKI_ISSUE_TRACKER: none — slices live inline in story files; nothing mirrors to GitHub issues.
  • WIKI_TRIAGE_LABELS: {"needs-triage":"needs-triage","needs-info":"needs-info","ready-for-agent":"ready-for-agent","ready-for-human":"ready-for-human","wontfix":"wontfix","bug":"bug","enhancement":"enhancement"}

prime(scope=llm-wiki) carries orientation, active ADRs, plan state, and read order. Design rationale lives in wiki ADRs, not this file.

Authoring rules and resync protocol: wiki://authoring (MCP resource) or kmd resource wiki://authoring (CLI, same content).

Wiki-aware skills: /intent, /to-stories, /triage, /to-issues, /tdd, /retro, /handoff. Run /intent to scaffold a new scope or refine intent on an existing one. /wiki is the central hub — invoke it for the full constellation map. /retro grooms the session whenever drift is suspected; /handoff closes it, gated on a retro newer than the primer.

Companion skills for vault file editing: obsidian-markdown (wikilinks/callouts/frontmatter in .md files), obsidian-bases (.base views), obsidian-cli (live-Obsidian-only operations), json-canvas (.canvas files).

Layout

packages/{db,cli,mcp} compose into packages/kmd — the esbuild-bundled npm package, the only published artifact. plugins/src/wiki-sdd is the shared plugin source, laid out as an Agent Plugins 1.0.0 package that Kiro installs as is; plugins/{claude,codex,coco}/wiki-sdd are rendered adapter copies plus per-harness chrome, all authored here ([[adr-plugin-authoring-surface]], [[adr-agent-plugins-package-source]]). TypeScript strict, pnpm workspace, Biome, Vitest, node:sqlite.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
