calva-backseat-driver: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

calva-backseat-driver copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from BetterThanTomorrow/calva-backseat-driver. It costs 492 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Developer instructions for Backseat Driver, a ClojureScript VS Code extension that lets AI agents evaluate code in a running ClojureScript environment. They explain its REPL, or interactive code prompt, and how to inspect its state safely.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them while developing or debugging the extension, evaluating ClojureScript, inspecting application state, and working with its AI context and VS Code integration.
Why use it?
They help an agent use the correct interactive session and avoid unsafe or unreadable state inspection. This reduces mistakes caused by using the build environment instead of the extension’s live environment.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00492 $0.00492
Opus 5 $0.00246 $0.00246
Sonnet 5 $0.00098 $0.00098
Haiku 4.5 $0.00049 $0.00049

Security

Grade A, and why

calva-backseat-driver copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What Backseat Driver Is

Backseat Driver bridges AI coding assistants into Interactive Programming — the REPL-driven development practice central to Clojure culture. A ClojureScript VS Code extension running in the Extension Host (Node.js), built from scratch with zero npm dependencies for the protocol layer. Provides MCP server and VS Code Language Model tools for REPL evaluation, structural editing, and output inspection.

REPL Environment

  • Primary REPL: Backseat Driver CLJS (clojure_evaluate_code, replSessionKey: "cljs") — for developing the extension itself
  • Shadow-cljs build tooling: CLJ session (replSessionKey: "clj") — build system only

This is ClojureScript on Node.js. Use the cljs session, not clj.

State Inspection Safety

  • @db/!app-db — always dissoc :vscode/extension-context before inspecting (circular references)
  • VS Code API objects — use select-keys or dissoc, never print raw
  • Datascript connections — @db/!output-conn (session output), @db/!history-conn (persistent history)

Bundled AI Context (chatSkills / chatInstructions)

Skills are registered in package.json as chatSkills (Copilot skill loader + MCP resources). Short pointer instructions in chatInstructions are always injected. Skills are conditional on user settings (provideBdSkill, provideEditSkill).

Key Development Commands

npm run watch # shadow-cljs + nREPL, auto-runs tests
bb run-e2e-tests-ws # Full E2E (output → .tmp/e2e-output.log)
bb run-mcp-inspector # Test MCP tools interactively
bb package-pre-release # Package pre-release VSIX

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
