Project instructions for a tool that provides selected Australian health and welfare datasets from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, a public health research agency. The data comes from data.gov.au in Excel format.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing or maintaining this data tool, especially its dataset discovery, Excel parsing, caching, search ranking, and curated health-data features.
Why use it?
It gives developers the repository’s required modules, data sources, licence details, and project-specific rules in one place.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01739 $0.01739
Opus 5 $0.00870 $0.00870
Sonnet 5 $0.00348 $0.00348
Haiku 4.5 $0.00174 $0.00174

Measured 8d ago against content hash d5ac785f2abd, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-09, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

aihw-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repo-specific module set

Required (every sister): server.py, models.py, curated.py, client.py, cache.py, shaping.py, data/curated/*.yaml

Repo-specific extras:

  • parsing.py — XLSX reader
  • discovery.py — CKAN auto-discovery
  • catalog.py — search ranking

Repo-specific gotchas

  • Licence is CC-BY 3.0 AU, matching APRA / ATO / ASIC.
  • Most AIHW publications are PDF-only — only datasets with machine-readable XLSX on data.gov.au (plus the two MyHospitals JSON-API datasets) are curated.
  • GRIM (General Record of Incidence of Mortality) goes back to 1907 — wide historical range, watch out for series breaks (1996 reclassification).

The core 5-tool surface (uniform across sisters — mandatory)

The 5 below are the uniform brand. Additional tools (e.g. top_n, stats) are allowed where the data shape genuinely needs them — they must use the same Annotated[Field] discipline and DataResponse envelope as the core 5.

  1. search_*(query, limit) — fuzzy search across known datasets/tables/locations
  2. describe_*(id) — schema + filter values + source URL
  3. get_data(id, filters, start_period, end_period, format) — query
  4. latest(id, filters) — current snapshot (caps to limit for register data)
  5. list_curated() — enumerate supported IDs

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
