zotero-mcp: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

zotero-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from BlaineHeffron/zotero-mcp. It costs 183 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for zotero-mcp, a connector for Zotero 7, a reference manager used to organize research papers and sources.

In plain words
What is it for?
They guide changes, testing, and verification for Zotero integration. They require reading metadata through Zotero's local interface and writing only through its approved extension.
Why use it?
They prevent unsafe access to Zotero's files and require the agent to state clearly when information or actions are unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00183 $0.00183
Opus 5 $0.00092 $0.00092
Sonnet 5 $0.00037 $0.00037
Haiku 4.5 $0.00018 $0.00018

Security

Grade A, and why

zotero-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

zotero-mcp

Capability-honest stdio adapter for Zotero 7.

Minimize code

Ship the feature with the fewest lines. Do not add parallel scopes, policy layers, wrappers, or helpers unless an existing path cannot do the job. Prefer deleting and reusing over extending. Extra code is extra bugs and extra maintenance.

Invariants

  • Read through Zotero's loopback GET API. Write only through the authenticated Research Workbench extension.
  • Never open zotero.sqlite or the Zotero data directory.
  • Accept only the existing loopback URL policy; do not follow redirects or weaken token handling.
  • Report unsupported or unavailable capabilities explicitly. Metadata is not full text.
  • Automated tests are offline and must never write to a real Zotero library.

Verification

  • Run npm test, npm run typecheck, and npm run build.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
