arxiv-mcp-server is a local MCP server that helps AI agents read arXiv papers from their original LaTeX, create citations, and track topics while keeping papers on disk. It is for literature research workflows, with optional search and integrations for MCP-compatible clients. Catalogue add-ons help agents use and configure the server.

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

Grade A, and why
arxiv-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.
A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.
Nothing flagged
None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.
How it starts
The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 97 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

Project
arxiv-mcp-server is a Python 3.11+ Model Context Protocol server. It exposes arXiv search, metadata, paper download/read, original LaTeX retrieval, citation graphs, topic alerts, and optional local semantic search over stdio or Streamable HTTP.
Setup and validation
Use the locked uv environment:
uv sync --extra test --extra dev
uv run black --check .
uv run pytest
Apply formatting with:
uv run black .
Run a targeted test with:
uv run pytest tests/tools/test_search.py -q
Run the stdio server from the checkout with:
uv run arxiv-mcp-server --storage-path /tmp/arxiv-mcp-papers
The process waits for MCP messages on stdin. It is not an interactive CLI.
Architecture
src/arxiv_mcp_server/server.py: MCP tool/prompt registration, dispatch, stdio transport, and Streamable HTTP transport.src/arxiv_mcp_server/config.py: Pydantic settings and shared arXiv client lifecycle.src/arxiv_mcp_server/arxiv_api.py: shared arXiv request coordination.src/arxiv_mcp_server/tools/: tool schemas and handlers.src/arxiv_mcp_server/prompts/: registered MCP prompt definitions and routing.src/arxiv_mcp_server/resources/: legacy/local paper management paths retained for compatibility.tests/: unit and protocol-level tests.server.json: official MCP Registry metadata.manifest.jsonandscripts/build-mcpb.sh: Claude Desktop MCPB packaging.
Tool groups
The server registers 16 tools:
- Discovery:
search_papers,get_abstract - Full text:
download_paper,list_papers,read_paper - Original source:
get_paper_latex,list_paper_latex_sections,get_paper_latex_section - Graphs and monitoring:
citation_graph,watch_topic,list_watches,check_alerts,unwatch_topic - Citation export:
export_citations - Optional local embeddings:
semantic_search,reindex
Keep tool schemas, package exports, server registration, dispatch, tests, and README documentation synchronized when changing the tool surface.
What this file has done since we first saw it
Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

arxiv-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository blazickjp/arxiv-mcp-server (3,121 stars, last pushed 13d ago), licensed Apache-2.0. It adds 831 tokens to every session, about $0.0042 per session on Opus 5. A static security scan graded it A with 0 findings. No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-08-30.
