agent-skills AGENTS.md

agent-skills AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from boundsj/agent-skills. It costs 663 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A set of instructions for using and writing agent skills, which are reusable guides that tell coding agents when and how to perform particular tasks. It also covers installing individual skills for tools such as Claude Code and Codex.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when installing a skill, creating its SKILL.md file and optional supporting files, or learning how skills are organised and triggered.
Why use it?
It provides the required structure and usage rules for sharing skills reliably between projects and coding agents.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00663 $0.00663
Opus 5 $0.00331 $0.00331
Sonnet 5 $0.00133 $0.00133
Haiku 4.5 $0.00066 $0.00066

Measured 4d ago against content hash 7f7cb8d7532d, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

agent-skills AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Agent Skills

Installing Skills

Clone this repo and symlink individual skill directories into your agent's skills folder:

# Claude Code
ln -s /path/to/agent-skills/cmux ~/.claude/skills/cmux

# Codex
ln -s /path/to/agent-skills/cmux ~/.codex/skills/cmux

Each skill is a self-contained directory. Symlink only the ones you need.

Writing a Skill

Directory structure

skill-name/
  SKILL.md # Required -- the skill definition
  references/ # Optional -- detailed reference docs
    topic-a.md
    topic-b.md
helper-script.sh # Optional -- scripts the skill invokes

SKILL.md format

Every SKILL.md must start with YAML frontmatter:

---
name: skill-name
description: |
One-paragraph description of when this skill should be used.
This is matched against user prompts to decide whether to load the skill,
so write it as trigger conditions, not a summary.
---

name -- kebab-case identifier, must match the directory name.

description -- the agent uses this to decide whether to activate the skill. Be specific about trigger conditions. Examples:

  • "Use when orchestrating terminal sessions or running parallel commands inside cmux."
  • "Use when building features with TCA, structuring reducers, or testing TCA features."

Body content

After the frontmatter, write instructions for the agent:

  • Be directive. Write "Do X" and "Never Y", not "You might want to consider X."
  • Include tool names. If the skill wraps MCP tools or CLI commands, list exact names and signatures.
  • Show patterns. Short code/command snippets are more useful than prose explanations.
  • Keep it scannable. Use headers, tables, and bullet lists. Agents parse markdown structure.

Reference files

Use a references/ directory for detailed docs that would bloat SKILL.md:

  • Link from SKILL.md with a table mapping topic to file and when to load it
  • The agent reads reference files on demand, not all at once
  • Good for: API references, testing patterns, advanced topics

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
