payload-mcp-oauth: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

payload-mcp-oauth CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from BrainWeb/payload-mcp-oauth. It costs 864 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Instructions for a Payload CMS plugin that adds OAuth 2.1, a secure login method for applications, to MCP servers. Payload CMS is a system for building content-managed applications, and MCP servers provide tools that AI clients can use.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when working on the plugin, its Payload example app, workspace commands, configuration, or OAuth integration with Claude.ai custom connectors.
Why use it?
It explains how the plugin fits into the existing API-key setup and how the project is organised and installed. This reduces guesswork when developing or testing the plugin.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00864 $0.00864
Opus 5 $0.00432 $0.00432
Sonnet 5 $0.00173 $0.00173
Haiku 4.5 $0.00086 $0.00086

Security

Grade A, and why

payload-mcp-oauth CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

@brainwebuk/payload-plugin-mcp-oauth is a Payload CMS plugin that adds OAuth 2.1 + PKCE + Dynamic Client Registration to @payloadcms/plugin-mcp MCP servers. This enables Payload-backed MCP servers to be used as Custom Connectors in Claude.ai alongside the existing API-key flow.

The plugin is purely additive — it wraps the existing MCP endpoint handler and adds OAuth endpoints/collections as a sibling plugin. See PROJECT_PLAN.md for the full architecture and phased task breakdown.

Commands

All commands use pnpm. The workspace root scripts delegate to packages with -r.

# Install (run once at root)
pnpm install

# Build the plugin package only
pnpm --filter ./packages/plugin build

# Run all tests across workspace
pnpm test

# Run tests in a single package
pnpm --filter ./packages/plugin test
pnpm --filter ./examples/payload-app test:integration

pnpm --filter @brainwebuk/payload-plugin-mcp-oauth typecheck

# Lint
pnpm lint
pnpm --filter ./packages/plugin lint

# Run example app dev server
pnpm dev:example

Build

The plugin uses tsup for dual ESM + CJS output with .d.ts declarations. packages/plugin/tsconfig.json extends the root tsconfig.base.json (strict mode, noUncheckedIndexedAccess, verbatimModuleSyntax). Both packages source from src/ and output to dist/.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
