Project instructions for Brightwing MCP Manager, a desktop app that installs, authenticates, and connects MCP servers to AI coding tools. MCP is a standard way for AI tools to use external services and data.

In plain words
What is it for?
Building and testing the React frontend and Rust backend, creating a local desktop app, and preparing a signed release.
Why use it?
They document the project structure, required build commands, tests, signing steps, and dependencies that must exist before the app can be built.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00865 $0.00865
Opus 5 $0.00432 $0.00432
Sonnet 5 $0.00173 $0.00173
Haiku 4.5 $0.00086 $0.00086

Security

Grade C, and why

mcp-manager CLAUDE.md scanned grade C with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Recursive force deletehighDestructive command

rm -rf with a variable or a broad path is one typo away from removing the wrong tree.

Project Overview

Brightwing MCP Manager is a Tauri v2 desktop app (Rust backend + React/TypeScript frontend) that manages MCP server installations, authentication, and proxying across AI tools (Claude Desktop, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, Codex, etc.).

Build & Test

# Frontend only
npm run build

# Rust check + tests
cd src-tauri && cargo check && cargo test

# Full app build (local, unsigned)
./build-app.sh

# Full app build with updater signing
TAURI_SIGNING_PRIVATE_KEY="$(cat ~/.tauri/brightwing.key)" TAURI_SIGNING_PRIVATE_KEY_PASSWORD="" npm run tauri build

# Install to /Applications (macOS)
rm -rf "/Applications/Brightwing MCP Manager.app"
cp -R "src-tauri/target/release/bundle/macos/Brightwing MCP Manager.app" /Applications/

Note: Sidecar binaries (brightwing-authd, brightwing-proxy, bw) must exist in src-tauri/binaries/ with target-triple suffixes before cargo check or tauri build will work. build-app.sh handles this automatically. In CI, placeholders are created first.

Release Process

To ship a new version:

  1. Bump version in all four places:

    • src-tauri/tauri.conf.json"version"
    • src-tauri/Cargo.tomlversion
    • package.json"version"
    • src/components/Navigation.tsxAPP_VERSION
    • src/components/About.tsx → version string
  2. Commit the version bump — do NOT use [skip ci] in the message, because GitHub applies it to all workflows triggered by that commit, including the tag-triggered build:

git commit -m "Bump to vX.Y.Z"

  3. Tag and push:

    git tag v<VERSION>
    git push origin main --tags

  4. The v* tag triggers .github/workflows/build.yml which:

    • Builds for macOS (arm64 + x64), Windows, Linux
    • Signs updater artifacts with Ed25519 key
    • Creates a draft GitHub Release with .dmg, .app.tar.gz, .sig, and latest.json
  5. Publish the draft release on GitHub to make it live

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
