MCP-memento: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

MCP-memento copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from caiowilson/MCP-memento. It costs 637 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project guide for MCP-memento, a tool that lets coding agents search and use information from a code repository. It explains the server, file indexing, related-file lookup, and context assembly.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when answering code questions or making changes in MCP-memento, especially when locating related files or refreshing its index.
Why use it?
It tells the coding agent which repository tools to use and discourages guessing when code context is missing or outdated.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is caiowilson/MCP-memento's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on MCP-memento itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything MCP-memento configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00637 $0.00637
Opus 5 $0.00318 $0.00318
Sonnet 5 $0.00127 $0.00127
Haiku 4.5 $0.00064 $0.00064

Security

Grade A, and why

MCP-memento copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

How it starts

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 37 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

MCP Tooling Policy (VS Code)

Use MCP tools to ground answers in the repo:

  • For any code question, call repo_context for the active file first.
  • If more context is needed, call repo_related_files, then repo_read_file or repo_search.
  • If unsure, say so and call a tool rather than guessing.
  • If results look stale or empty, call repo_index_status or repo_index_debug, then repo_reindex.

Tool names use underscore style (e.g., repo_context, repo_read_file, memory_search).

Project architecture (big picture)

Critical workflows

  • Build server: make build (this applies the pinned tree-sitter grammar subset; see README.md).
  • Run server: ./bin/memento-mcp (stdio JSON-RPC).
  • Tests: make test; for vet, pass the TREE_SITTER_TAGS value from the Makefile through -tags (see README.md).
  • VS Code extension (WIP): in vscode-extension/README.md use npm install + npm run build.

Project-specific conventions

  • The server’s workspace root is its process working directory; VS Code must set MCP cwd to ${workspaceFolder} (see README.md).
  • Indexing differs for git vs non-git repos: git uses git status polling + debounce; non-git uses fs watcher (see internal/mcp/server.go).
  • Tool names are underscore-only; dot names are mapped to underscores at runtime (see internal/mcp/server.go).

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
