cisco-axl-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

cisco-axl-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from calltelemetry/cisco-axl-mcp. It costs 710 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for an MCP server that wraps Cisco AXL, the API used to manage Cisco Unified Communications Manager. They cover building, testing, credentials, generated types, and secure credential rotation.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them to build and test Cisco Unified Communications Manager operations, configure environment-based credentials, generate types, and manage credential refresh settings.
Why use it?
They clarify how the server connects to a fixed phone-system target and how credentials must be supplied without exposing them in logs or responses.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00710 $0.00710
Opus 5 $0.00355 $0.00355
Sonnet 5 $0.00142 $0.00142
Haiku 4.5 $0.00071 $0.00071

Security

Grade A, and why

cisco-axl-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 55 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

cisco-axl-mcp

MCP server that wraps cisco-axl to call CUCM AXL operations.

Dev

yarn install
yarn build # Uses committed generated types, no WSDL needed
yarn test:mcp

Credentials

  • Defaults come from CUCM_HOST, CUCM_USERNAME, CUCM_PASSWORD, CUCM_VERSION.
  • In normal MCP mode, inline cucm_host, cucm_username, and cucm_password are disabled. The optional cucm_version selector must match the configured schema; it is not a cluster router.
  • Provider mode is a single fixed target: CUCM_HOST, CUCM_VERSION, TLS, allowlists, retry policy, and other service policy are captured at startup. Only username/password may rotate.
  • Configure provider mode with AXL_MCP_CREDENTIAL_PROVIDER as an absolute-path JSON argv array, plus AXL_MCP_CREDENTIAL_TTL_S, AXL_MCP_CREDENTIAL_MAX_STALE_S, AXL_MCP_CREDENTIAL_PROVIDER_TIMEOUT_MS, and optional AXL_MCP_CREDENTIAL_REFRESH_ON_SIGHUP. Provider stdout must be exactly a two-key JSON object, username and password; values never appear in responses, logs, or errors.
  • TTL is the primary refresh path. SIGHUP is optional. Old credential generations drain existing leases, new admissions cannot use retired generations, and stale credentials are bounded and fail closed.
  • The implementation does not retry authentication based on unproven response text. If stable numeric authentication evidence is unavailable, only TTL/SIGHUP refresh applies. There are no credential-management MCP tools; preserve the fixed eight-tool surface.

Type Generation

  • Generated types are committed to git — yarn build does NOT regenerate them.
  • To regenerate (only needed when adding CUCM versions or AXL objects):
    yarn generate:types # reads WSDLs from node_modules/cisco-axl/schema/

  • Custom schema path: yarn generate:types --schema-dir /path/to/schema
  • Outputs:
    • src/types/generated/wsdl-support.ts — version support matrix
    • src/types/generated/axl-objects.ts — top-level objects and CRUD operation map
    • src/types/generated/axl-operation-schemas.ts — operation input schemas, enums, and field metadata (942 operations)
    • generated/axl-top-level-objects.json
  • Commit updated generated files after regeneration.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
