slack-messages CLAUDE.md

slack-messages CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for coding agents from cardmagic/slack-messages. It costs 599 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for slack-messages, a command-line and MCP application that searches messages in a Slack workspace. They describe its commands, code layout, storage, and release process.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing, testing, linting, or releasing the slack-messages project.
Why use it?
They give coding agents the project-specific rules needed to change the repository without breaking its two operating modes or established workflow.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00599 $0.00599
Opus 5 $0.00300 $0.00300
Sonnet 5 $0.00120 $0.00120
Haiku 4.5 $0.00060 $0.00060

Measured 4d ago against content hash 79c56ec2fc56, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

slack-messages CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 4d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Commands

pnpm build # Compile TypeScript to dist/
pnpm dev # Watch mode for development
pnpm typecheck # Type check without emitting
pnpm lint # Run oxlint
pnpm test # Run tests
pnpm test:watch # Run tests in watch mode

Architecture

Dual-mode CLI/MCP tool for searching Slack messages:

src/
├── index.ts # Entry point - routes to CLI or MCP mode based on --mcp flag
├── cli.ts # Commander-based CLI (auth, index, search, etc.)
├── mcp.ts # MCP server exposing tools via @modelcontextprotocol/sdk
├── config.ts # Token and workspace configuration management
├── slack-api.ts # Slack Web API wrapper with rate limit handling
├── indexer.ts # Fetches messages from Slack API and builds search indexes
├── searcher.ts # Queries indexes with fuzzy matching via MiniSearch
├── formatter.ts # Terminal output formatting with chalk
└── types.ts # Shared types for Slack messages and search

Data flow:

  1. config.ts manages Slack workspace tokens stored in ~/.slack-messages/config.json
  2. slack-api.ts wraps the @slack/web-api client for fetching users, conversations, and messages
  3. indexer.ts fetches all messages and builds FTS5 + MiniSearch indexes in ~/.slack-messages/
  4. searcher.ts queries MiniSearch for fuzzy results, then fetches context from SQLite

Key dependencies:

  • @slack/web-api: Official Slack API client with retry handling
  • better-sqlite3: Create FTS5 index for full-text search
  • minisearch: Fuzzy search with typo tolerance
  • @modelcontextprotocol/sdk: MCP server for Claude Code integration

Storage

All data stored in ~/.slack-messages/:

  • config.json - Workspace tokens
  • index.db - SQLite FTS5 database
  • fuzzy.json - MiniSearch index
  • stats.json - Index metadata and cursors for incremental updates
  • users.json - Cached user information

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
