castorini-skills: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

castorini-skills CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from castorini/castorini-skills. It costs 393 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

A set of shared instructions for coding agents working across Castorini research repositories. It covers repository setup, command-line references, pipelines, releases, and local HTTP serving.

In plain words
What is it for?
Bootstrapping one or more repositories, running cross-repository pipelines, downloading Anserini, serving results locally, and publishing packages to PyPI or TestPyPI.
Why use it?
It gives agents consistent project conventions and points them to each repository’s own build, test, and lint instructions. This reduces repeated setup work and avoids conflicting guidance.

Written for Claude Code: the file is CLAUDE.md. Also seen: mentions CLAUDE.md; mentions AGENTS.md.

This is castorini/castorini-skills's own configuration. It tells Claude Code how to work on castorini-skills itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything castorini-skills configures →

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00393 $0.00393
Opus 5 $0.00197 $0.00197
Sonnet 5 $0.00079 $0.00079
Haiku 4.5 $0.00039 $0.00039

Security

Grade A, and why

castorini-skills CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

What it actually says

castorini-skills

This repo contains shared agent skills for cross-repo workflows in the Castorini research group.

Structure

skills/
anserini-fatjar/ # download and run the latest Anserini fatjar quickly
castorini-cli-reference/ # shared CLI contract docs
  castorini-onboard/ # single-repo or multi-repo clone/bootstrap and environment setup
  castorini-pipeline/ # cross-repo pipeline orchestration
  castorini-release/ # PyPI/TestPyPI publish workflow
castorini-serve/ # local HTTP serving and curl pipeline orchestration

Conventions

  • Each skill has a SKILL.md with YAML frontmatter (name, description).
  • The description field is a trigger: write "Use when..." not "This skill does...".
  • Reference material goes in references/ so agents can load it on demand instead of inlining everything into SKILL.md.
  • Runnable helpers go in scripts/.
  • Skills describe what to check and what flags exist. They do not railroad agents into rigid step-by-step flows.
  • Skills reference per-repo instruction files such as CLAUDE.md or AGENTS.md for build, test, and lint instructions. They do not duplicate them.

Target repos

  • nuggetizer — nugget creation, assignment, and evaluation
  • ragnarok — RAG answer generation and TREC evaluation
  • rank_llm — retrieval and LLM reranking workflows
  • umbrela — LLM-based relevance assessment (0–3 labels)
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
