CLAUDE.md

paperless-ngx-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from cbsmiley/paperless-ngx-mcp-server. It costs 769 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A project instruction file for a Paperless-NGX connector, where Paperless-NGX is a system for organizing and managing documents. It explains the project, commands, architecture, entry points, and its local and web connection modes.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing dependencies, starting the connector locally or over HTTP, developing with auto-reload, and understanding its API, server, and authentication entry points.
Why use it?
It gives a coding agent the context and operating rules needed to change or run the connector correctly, including how its many tools are registered.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00769 $0.00769
Opus 5 $0.00385 $0.00385
Sonnet 5 $0.00154 $0.00154
Haiku 4.5 $0.00077 $0.00077

Measured 8d ago against content hash 13656b10e883, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-08, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

paperless-ngx-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

Paperless-NGX MCP Server - A Model Context Protocol server enabling Claude AI to interact with Paperless-NGX document management systems. Supports two deployment modes:

  • Stdio mode: Direct local connection for Claude Desktop
  • HTTP/OAuth mode: Remote access for Claude.ai with Google Workspace authentication

Common Commands

npm install # Install dependencies
npm start <url> <token> # Run stdio mode (Claude Desktop)
npm run server # Run HTTP server (Claude.ai)
npm run dev # Development with auto-reload

Stdio mode can also use environment variables instead of CLI args:

PAPERLESS_URL=https://paperless.example.com PAPERLESS_TOKEN=abc123 npm start

Architecture

Entry Points

  • src/index.js - Stdio entry point using LiteMCP. Registers all 50 tools directly and starts in stdio mode.
  • src/server.js - HTTP/OAuth entry point using Express. Provides OAuth endpoints, SSE connections, MCP message handling at /mcp, and web UI.

Core Modules

API Client (src/api/PaperlessAPI.js)

  • Wraps all Paperless-NGX REST API endpoints
  • Handles authentication, error handling, and request building
  • Maps camelCase parameters to snake_case for the API
  • Uses FormData for file uploads, JSON for other requests

Tool Modules (src/tools/*.js)

  • Each file exports a register*Tools(mcp, api) function
  • Tools use Zod schemas for parameter validation
  • Return MCP-formatted responses: { content: [{ type: 'text', text: '...' }] }
  • 9 modules: documents, tags, correspondents, documentTypes, storagePaths, customFields, savedViews, shareLinks, system

Auth Modules (src/auth/*.js)

  • OAuth 2.0 implementation with PKCE support
  • discovery.js - .well-known endpoints
  • registration.js - Dynamic client registration
  • authorize.js - Authorization code generation
  • token.js - JWT token issuance with refresh token rotation

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
