openai-scala-client: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

openai-scala-client CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from cequence-io/openai-scala-client. It costs 5,024 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for an asynchronous Scala library that connects applications to OpenAI and other AI services. The project supports Scala 2.12, 2.13, and 3, and uses SBT, Scala’s build tool.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when changing API integrations or modules, running tests and coverage checks, formatting code, validating changes, or compiling one module.
Why use it?
They collect the commands needed to build, test, format, validate, and compile individual parts of the library across supported Scala versions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.05024 $0.05024
Opus 5 $0.02512 $0.02512
Sonnet 5 $0.01005 $0.01005
Haiku 4.5 $0.00502 $0.00502

Security

Grade A, and why

openai-scala-client CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

This is OpenAI Scala Client - an async Scala client for OpenAI API and multiple LLM providers. It's a multi-module Scala project that supports Scala 2.12, 2.13, and 3, providing comprehensive coverage of OpenAI endpoints plus adapters for Anthropic, Google (Gemini/Vertex AI), Perplexity, and other LLM providers.

The library is designed to be self-contained with minimal dependencies and uses a Play WS backend for HTTP calls. It's published as io.cequence:openai-scala-client on Maven Central.

Build & Test Commands

The project uses SBT with custom command aliases defined in build.sbt:

Core Commands

  • Build & test: sbt clean test or sbt ++2.13.11 clean test for a specific Scala version
  • Test with coverage: sbt testWithCoverage (alias for coverage; test; coverageReport)
  • Format code: sbt formatCode (runs scalafmt, scalafmtSbt, and Test/scalafmt)
  • Validate code: sbt validateCode (runs scalafix and scalafmt checks - this is what CI runs)
  • Compile specific module: sbt core/compile or sbt client/compile etc.
  • Run specific test: sbt "testOnly *YourTestClassName"
  • Run example: sbt "examples/runMain io.cequence.openaiscala.examples.YourExampleClass"

Cross-Build

The project cross-compiles for Scala 2.12.18, 2.13.11, and 3.2.2:

  • sbt ++2.12.18 test
  • sbt ++2.13.11 test
  • sbt ++3.2.2 test

Running Examples

The Example trait uses System.exit() which sbt's TrapExit mechanism intercepts, causing output to be swallowed. For reliable output when running examples from sbt, either:

  • Run from IntelliJ directly (recommended)
  • Write standalone main methods using Await.result instead of extending Example

Module Architecture

The codebase is organized into multiple SBT subprojects with clear dependency relationships:

Core Modules

  • openai-core (core): Core domain models, JSON formats, service interfaces (OpenAIService, OpenAICoreService, OpenAIChatCompletionService), adapters, retry helpers, and base exception types. This is the foundation that other modules depend on.
  • openai-client (client): Main client implementation with factories (OpenAIServiceFactory, OpenAIChatCompletionServiceFactory) and concrete service implementations. Depends on and aggregates openai-core.
  • openai-client-stream (client_stream): Streaming extensions providing OpenAIStreamedServiceExtra and streaming factories for SSE-based completions. Depends on openai-client.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
