idea-to-essay: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

idea-to-essay AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from chemaoxfz/idea-to-essay. It costs 479 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for a research-essay agent skill. Given a research idea, the skill develops a testable argument, gathers verified papers, creates code-based figures, and produces a standalone HTML essay.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to turn a research idea into a sourced, data-supported essay and when maintaining the skill’s instructions, references, assets, or scripts.
Why use it?
It defines the workflow and points to the files and scripts needed for each stage, so the skill is used consistently.

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00479 $0.00479
Opus 5 $0.00239 $0.00239
Sonnet 5 $0.00096 $0.00096
Haiku 4.5 $0.00048 $0.00048

Security

Grade A, and why

idea-to-essay AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured today.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

The opening of the file, as written. The whole thing — 36 lines — stays where its author put it; the contents beside it link to each section on GitHub.

AGENTS.md

This repository is one Agent Skill, research-essay, packaged in the Agent Skills format.

If your agent supports skills, install it and invoke it by name. See the README.

If it does not, read skills/research-essay/SKILL.md and follow it. That file is the entry point. It names the reference files under skills/research-essay/references/ to read as each phase needs them, and the scripts under skills/research-essay/scripts/ to run. Load the reference files on demand rather than all at once. SKILL.md is the workflow entry point, not a duplicate of the reference guides.

What it does

Given a research idea, it follows a staged workflow: digest the idea into a falsifiable thesis and a chain of argument, sweep the literature and download verified full texts, produce numbers and figures from code, outline, then write one standalone HTML essay that teaches the idea in conversation with that literature. Historical and comparative essays adapt the analysis to their question. Revisions resume at the affected stage and preserve the existing project.

If you are editing this repository

The skill itself is skills/research-essay/. Its layout is fixed by the Agent Skills specification: SKILL.md at the root of the skill folder, with references/, assets/ and scripts/ beside it.

  • SKILL.md stays under 500 lines. Detail belongs in references/.
  • The frontmatter name must keep matching the folder name.
  • Keep the skill metadata version and both Claude plugin manifest versions aligned.
  • Never commit references/*.local.md, private project paths, or research full-text archives.
  • House conventions live in references/conventions.md, and nothing else should restate them.
  • The prose rules in that file apply to this repository too. Short sentences, no em dashes, few semicolons.
  • After changing anything under skills/, run claude plugin validate skills --strict if you have the Claude Code CLI, and python3 -m py_compile skills/research-essay/scripts/*.py.
  • After changing plugin metadata, also run claude plugin validate . --strict.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
