superdb-mcp: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

superdb-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from chrismo/superdb-mcp. It costs 1,108 tokens per session, scanned A, original, BSD-3-Clause.

A repository instruction file for Claude Code, covering how to build, test, and structure superdb-mcp, an MCP server that lets AI assistants run SuperSQL queries through the SuperDB command-line program. TDD means writing a failing test before the fix, then making it pass and cleaning up the code.

In plain words
What is it for?
Installing dependencies, building or starting the server, running Vitest tests, and changing the code that launches SuperDB and routes its tools.
Why use it?
It gives the coding agent the project's commands, architecture, and required test-first workflow, including how tests behave when the SuperDB program is unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01108 $0.01108
Opus 5 $0.00554 $0.00554
Sonnet 5 $0.00222 $0.00222
Haiku 4.5 $0.00111 $0.00111

Security

Grade A, and why

superdb-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Build Commands

npm install # Install dependencies
npm run build # Compile TypeScript to dist/
npm run dev # Watch mode for development
npm start # Run the MCP server

Testing

Uses Vitest with globals enabled.

npm test # Run tests once
npm run test:watch # Watch mode

Tests live in src/__tests__/. Tests that require the super binary use it.skipIf() to skip gracefully when the binary is unavailable.

TDD is required. Write a failing test before implementing a fix or feature. The cycle is: red test, green implementation, then refactor if needed.

Architecture

This is an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that wraps the SuperDB super binary, allowing AI assistants to execute SuperSQL queries without shell escaping issues.

Core Structure

  • src/index.ts - MCP server entry point. Registers all tools and resources, routes tool calls to implementations.
  • src/lib/super.ts - Core subprocess execution. runSuper() spawns the super binary and handles stdin/stdout. All tools use this.
  • src/lib/lsp-client.ts - LSP client for code intelligence features (completions, hover docs).
  • src/lib/version.ts - Parses SuperDB version strings from super --version output.

Tool Implementations

  • src/tools/query.ts - super_query, super_schema - file-based query operations
  • src/tools/db.ts - super_db_* tools for database pool operations
  • src/tools/info.ts - super_info, super_help, super_test_compat - version/docs/compatibility
  • src/tools/lsp.ts - super_complete, super_docs - LSP-powered code intelligence

Content & Resources

All content (docs, tutorials, recipes, grok patterns, expert guide) is consumed from the @chrismo/superkit npm package — superkit is the single source of truth. This repo no longer has a local docs/ directory.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
