Project instructions for claude-meter, a tool that collects anonymised Claude Code billing data for community analysis of Anthropic pricing.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when developing claude-meter, including its command-line interface, session tracking, repository structure, and Git branches or pull requests.
Why use it?
They keep session state, repository rules, and approval requirements in one place, so work can resume consistently and changes follow the project's workflow.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01990 $0.01990
Opus 5 $0.00995 $0.00995
Sonnet 5 $0.00398 $0.00398
Haiku 4.5 $0.00199 $0.00199

Measured 5d ago against content hash 628286472c71, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-05, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

claude-code-meter CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Session State

On resume, compaction, or context loss: Read SESSION_STATE.md in this directory immediately. It contains the current working state — infrastructure, pending tasks, recent fixes, and architectural constraints. Update it when significant state changes occur.

Overview

Community usage metrics collector for Claude Code. Captures anonymized billing data from API responses to enable statistical analysis of Anthropic's pricing model through community data aggregation.

Git Workflow

  • Do not push directly to main unless the user explicitly instructs you to do so in the current turn. Otherwise use feature branches and PRs, even for small fixes.
  • If writing directly to main is explicitly authorized, pull/rebase from origin/main before any other write action so you start from the current remote tip.
  • Branch naming: feature/<name> for features, fix/<name> for bugfixes.
  • Commit messages: lead with what changed and why, not how.

Repository Structure

  • bin/claude-meter.mjs — CLI entry point (status, history, rates, share, setup)
  • src/
    • constants.mjs — paths, known API rates, rate-limit header names
    • interceptor/ — Node.js fetch interceptor (loaded via NODE_OPTIONS=--import)
      • preload.mjs — entry point for --import

      • writer.mjs — build and append validated JSONL rows
      • reader.mjs — parse, filter, group JSONL for CLI
    • cli/ — CLI command implementations
      • status.mjs — current session summary
      • history.mjs — daily/weekly usage aggregates
      • rates.mjs — OLS regression for billing weight estimation
      • share.mjs — interactive payload review + community submission
      • setup.mjs — wrapper detection and interceptor integration
    • share/ — community data pipeline
      • payload-builder.mjs — aggregates per-turn JSONL into per-session share payload
      • client.mjs — HTTP client for community API endpoint

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
