A set of rules for writing JSON, a structured format used for configuration and data exchange. It covers quotes, commas, indentation, object and array layout, and valid structure.

In plain words
What is it for?
It guides the creation and editing of configuration files and other data stored in JSON.
Why use it?
It reduces syntax errors and keeps JSON files consistent and readable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00417 $0.00417
Opus 5 $0.00209 $0.00209
Sonnet 5 $0.00083 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00042 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

vastai-host-mcp json.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

JSON Instructions

JSON Content Rules

  • Use spaces for indentation (2 spaces per level per .editorconfig); avoid tabs.
  • End files with a newline (per .editorconfig).
  • Use double quotes for all strings and property names (JSON standard).
  • Ensure proper comma usage: include commas between elements, but not after the last element in an object or array.
  • Use consistent indentation for nested structures.
  • Keep the JSON structure valid and parseable.

JSON Structure and Formatting

  • Objects: Place opening braces on the same line as the property name or at the start of the file. Close braces on their own line at the same indentation level as the opening line.
  • Arrays: For short arrays (single line), place all elements on one line. For longer arrays, place each element on its own line with proper indentation.
  • Property Order: When practical, keep properties in a logical or alphabetical order to improve readability and maintainability.
  • Comments: JSON does not officially support comments. However, some JSON files in this repository (like .vscode/settings.json and .devcontainer/devcontainer.json) use JSONC format with // style comments, which is supported by VS Code. Use comments sparingly and only in files where the tool explicitly supports them.
  • Whitespace: Use consistent spacing around colons (no space before, one space after).

Validation

Use the following tools and checks to validate JSON files and ensure they conform to these guidelines:

  • Use jq for validation and formatting: jq . file.json to validate standard JSON files. Note that jq does not support JSONC (JSON with comments).
  • Many editors provide built-in JSON formatting (e.g., VS Code's "Format Document" command).
  • The repository's pre-commit hooks include end-of-file-fixer which applies to JSON files.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
