Code-Index-MCP CLAUDE.md

Repository instructions for Code-Index-MCP, a tool that searches code and finds named code elements. They explain which search method to use, how to check whether the code index is ready, and how to debug search problems.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when exploring or debugging the Consiliency/Code-Index-MCP repository, especially when searching code or looking up symbols.
Why use it?
They help an agent avoid trusting incomplete or outdated search results. They also provide a fallback to ordinary text search when the index is unavailable.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5 $0.00330 $0.00330
Opus 5 $0.00165 $0.00165
Sonnet 5 $0.00066 $0.00066
Haiku 4.5 $0.00033 $0.00033

Measured 3d ago against content hash 915abf588a8d, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-08-30, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

Code-Index-MCP CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 3d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Claude Agent Instructions

AI Agents: Do not modify this file directly. Add any updates to AGENTS.md in this directory.

This repository uses AGENTS.md for all agent guidance and configuration. Please refer to the adjacent AGENTS.md file in this directory for full instructions and notes.

Current dependency setup uses uv sync --locked. Language and sandbox support claims are centralized in docs/SUPPORT_MATRIX.md.

Search Tool Priority

Use indexed MCP search only when repository readiness is ready, or when a ready tool response is already available. Check get_status first when readiness is unknown. If search_code or symbol_lookup returns index_unavailable with safe_fallback: "native_search", use native Grep/Glob or follow the returned readiness remediation such as reindex.

The v3 public-alpha repository model supports many unrelated repositories on one machine, with one registered worktree per git common directory. Only the tracked/default branch is indexed automatically; same-repo sibling worktrees and non-default branch queries are not authoritative indexed-search contexts until readiness is ready.

important-instruction-reminders

Do what has been asked; nothing more, nothing less. NEVER create files unless they're absolutely necessary for achieving your goal. ALWAYS prefer editing an existing file to creating a new one. NEVER proactively create documentation files (*.md) or README files. Only create documentation files if explicitly requested by the User.

Debugging Guidelines

  • Never use broken MCP Tools to debug the same broken MCP Tool
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
