mcp-airq: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

mcp-airq CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from CorantGmbH/mcp-airq. It costs 1,218 tokens per session, scanned A, original, Apache-2.0.

Project instructions for the mcp-airq server, which connects an agent to air-Q sensors on a local network. They explain its architecture, configuration, modules, and sensor tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Guiding development, testing, configuration, and maintenance of the mcp-airq project.
Why use it?
They provide the codebase context needed to make changes safely and understand how the server communicates with the devices.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01218 $0.01218
Opus 5 $0.00609 $0.00609
Sonnet 5 $0.00244 $0.00244
Haiku 4.5 $0.00122 $0.00122

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-airq CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for air-Q air quality sensor devices. Enables Claude Desktop, Claude Code, and other MCP clients to query and configure air-Q devices on the local network.

Built as a thin tool layer on top of aioairq (the official async Python library for air-Q).

Architecture

Claude Desktop/Code/Web
    └── MCP Client (JSON-RPC 2.0 over STDIO)
            └── mcp-airq (this project)
                    └── aioairq → air-Q device(s) via HTTP + AES-256

Key Modules

Module Purpose
server.py FastMCP instance, lifespan (aiohttp session), entry point
config.py Loads device config from AIRQ_DEVICES env var or AIRQ_CONFIG_FILE
devices.py DeviceManager: caches AirQ instances, resolves device names (substring match)
errors.py @handle_airq_errors decorator — catches aioairq exceptions, returns readable strings
tools/_helpers.py Shared helpers: _manager(), _resolve(), _json()
tools/read.py 11 read-only tools (list_devices, get_air_quality, get_air_quality_history, get_device_info, get_config, get_logs, identify_device, get_led_theme, get_possible_led_themes, get_night_mode, get_brightness_config)
tools/write.py 5 write tools (set_device_name, set_led_theme, set_night_mode, set_brightness, configure_network)
tools/dangerous.py 2 destructive tools (restart_device, shutdown_device)

Design Patterns

  • Lifespan: aiohttp.ClientSession is created/closed in app_lifespan(). The DeviceManager is yielded as the lifespan context and accessed in tools via ctx.request_context.lifespan_context.
  • Error handling: The @handle_airq_errors decorator wraps all tool functions. It catches InvalidAuth, APIAccessDenied, ClientError, TimeoutError and returns user-friendly strings instead of crashing the MCP session.
  • ToolAnnotations: Every tool is annotated with readOnlyHint, destructiveHint, and idempotentHint for correct client behavior.
  • Multi-device: Each tool has an optional device: str | None parameter. Single-device setups auto-resolve; multi-device uses case-insensitive substring matching.

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
