In plain words
What is it for?
Adding or changing server code, compiling TypeScript, running tests, starting the server, and working with YouTube data, transcripts, and caching.
Why use it?
It helps coding agents find the right files and use the project’s expected build, test, and development process.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00692 $0.00692
Opus 5 $0.00346 $0.00346
Sonnet 5 $0.00138 $0.00138
Haiku 4.5 $0.00069 $0.00069

Security

Grade A, and why

youtube-mcp-server AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 8d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Repository Guidelines

Project Structure & Module Organization

  • src/index.ts: MCP resource and tool registration shared by transports.
  • src/stdio-server.ts: local stdio transport used by the npm executable.
  • src/http-server.ts: Streamable HTTP /mcp transport and health endpoint.
  • src/youtube-service.ts: YouTubeService wrapper for YouTube Data API calls, transcript retrieval, and caching.
  • src/types/youtube-types.ts: shared TypeScript interfaces and error types.
  • src/types.d.ts: external module declarations.
  • Build output is generated in dist/ (do not edit manually).

Build, Test, and Development Commands

  • npm install: install dependencies.
  • npm run build: compile TypeScript (src/) to dist/.
  • npm start: run built server (dist/http-server.js) on PORT (default 3000).
  • npm run dev: run directly from TypeScript with ts-node loader.
  • npm test: compile and run the HTTP server smoke tests.
  • npm run test:live: exercise the flagship research tool against a public YouTube video.
  • npm run clean: remove build artifacts.
  • Docker flow: docker build -t youtube-mcp-server . then docker run -p 3000:3000 --env-file .env youtube-mcp-server.

Coding Style & Naming Conventions

  • Language: TypeScript (strict mode, NodeNext modules, ESM imports).
  • Use 2-space indentation and semicolons, matching existing files.
  • Prefer explicit interfaces/types for tool inputs and API responses.
  • Use descriptive camelCase for variables/functions, PascalCase for classes/types, and kebab-case for MCP tool names (for example, search-videos).
  • Keep imports module-safe for NodeNext (./file.js style for local imports).

Testing Guidelines

  • Minimum validation for each change:
    1. npm test must succeed.
    2. For protocol changes, verify /mcp with MCP Inspector (npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector).
    3. Exercise affected tools/resources with realistic IDs and confirm error handling for invalid inputs.
  • Add transport-level tests under tests/ using Node's built-in test runner.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
