usgs-water-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

usgs-water-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from cyanheads/usgs-water-mcp-server. It costs 5,717 tokens per session, scanned A, a copy of obsidian-mcp-server AGENTS.md, Apache-2.0.

A set of coding instructions for the USGS water MCP server. USGS is the United States Geological Survey, and an MCP server is a service that gives AI assistants tools or data access.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing or reviewing tools, resources, and data-canvas features in this server, especially when handling errors, logs, stored state, or secrets.
Why use it?
It establishes consistent rules for errors, logging, secrets, state, and requests for missing user input. This helps developers extend the server without breaking its expected behavior.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.05717 $0.05717
Opus 5.5 $0.02287 $0.02287
Sonnet 5.5 $0.01143 $0.01143
Haiku 4.5 $0.00572 $0.00572

Security

Grade A, and why

usgs-water-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Origin

This is a copy

75% identical to obsidian-mcp-server AGENTS.md — 446 lines differ, which has more behind it and is treated as the original. This page carries a canonical link to it rather than competing with it.

Developer Protocol

Server: usgs-water-mcp-server Version: 0.4.0 Framework: @cyanheads/mcp-ts-core ^0.13.15 Engines: Bun ≥1.4.0, Node ≥24.0.0 MCP SDK: @modelcontextprotocol/server ^2.3.1 Zod: ^4.6.7

Read the framework docs first: node_modules/@cyanheads/mcp-ts-core/CLAUDE.md contains the full API reference — builders, Context, error codes, exports, patterns. This file covers server-specific conventions only.

Core Rules

  • Logic throws, framework catches. Tool/resource handlers are pure — throw on failure, no try/catch. Plain Error is fine; the framework catches, classifies, and formats. Use error factories (notFound(), validationError(), etc.) when the error code matters.
  • Use ctx.log for request-scoped logging. No console calls.
  • Use ctx.state for tenant-scoped storage. Never access persistence directly.
  • Need input the caller didn't supply? return ctx.requestInput(...) and read ctx.inputs when the handler is re-entered. Never await for user input mid-handler.
  • Secrets in env vars only — never hardcoded.
  • Cut noise. Add only what earns its place: no speculative generality, no guards for states the framework already prevents (Zod-validated params, classified errors), no abstraction until a third caller proves it, no option nothing sets.
  • Close the loop on issues. When implementing work tracked by a GitHub issue, comment on the issue with what landed and close it. Do both — a comment without a close leaves stale issues open; a close without a comment leaves no record of what shipped. The comment is for future readers — state the concrete changes, not the conversation that produced them.

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
