n8n-mcp AGENTS.md

n8n-mcp AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from czlonkowski/n8n-mcp. It costs 1,570 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for n8n-MCP, a server that gives AI assistants access to n8n documentation, workflow checks, and workflow management. They describe the project's structure, conventions, and development commands.

In plain words
What is it for?
They guide changes to the MCP server, database, workflow validation, n8n API integration, templates, community nodes, and related tests.
Why use it?
They help coding agents understand how this codebase is organised and which rules apply to different parts. They also clarify which tools work offline and which need a live n8n setup.

About the project

n8n-MCP is a Model Context Protocol server that gives AI assistants structured knowledge of n8n's workflow-automation nodes, including their properties, operations, documentation, and examples. It helps developers use AI assistants to create and work with n8n workflows. The catalogue contains skills, agents, and instructions for using it.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01570 $0.01570
Opus 5 $0.00785 $0.00785
Sonnet 5 $0.00314 $0.00314
Haiku 4.5 $0.00157 $0.00157

Security

Grade A, and why

n8n-mcp AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

n8n-mcp is a Model Context Protocol server that gives AI assistants access to n8n node documentation, workflow validation, and workflow management. Documentation and validation tools work offline against the bundled SQLite node database. Management tools prefixed with n8n_ operate on a live n8n instance and require API configuration.

Project Structure & Module Organization

Core TypeScript lives in src/. Important subsystems include:

  • src/mcp/ — MCP server, request handlers, tool definitions and documentation, and bundled skills
  • src/database/ — SQLite adapters, repositories, FTS5 search, and migrations
  • src/loaders/, src/parsers/, src/mappers/ — node loading, metadata parsing, and documentation mapping
  • src/services/ — validation, workflow diffing and autofix, node/version lookup, the n8n API client, and security scanners
  • src/templates/ and src/community/ — workflow-template and community-node ingestion and documentation
  • src/telemetry/, src/triggers/, and src/n8n/ — telemetry, trigger detection, and the n8n community-node wrapper
  • src/scripts/ — maintenance scripts compiled to dist/scripts/
  • src/types/, src/constants/, and src/utils/ — shared types, constants, and helpers
  • src/http-server*.ts — HTTP transports and session persistence
  • src/mcp-engine.ts and src/mcp-tools-engine.ts — APIs for embedding the server

Tests mirror the source areas in tests/unit/ and tests/integration/, with fixtures, factories, helpers, and mocks under tests/. React/Vite apps live in ui-apps/src/, repository utilities in scripts/, documentation in docs/, and generated skills and databases in data/. Treat dist/, coverage output, and ui-apps/dist/ as generated; do not edit them directly.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
