RivalSearchMCP CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from damionrashford/RivalSearchMCP. It costs 2,770 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Contributor instructions for RivalSearchMCP, an MCP server for web and scientific research. MCP is a standard way for AI clients to connect to tools and data, and `uv` is a Python dependency and environment manager.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when setting up RivalSearchMCP with `uv`, running it through FastMCP, configuring deployment, or preparing development changes.
Why use it?
They explain the project overview, dependency setup, server commands, and configuration files needed for development.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.02770 $0.02770
Opus 5 $0.01385 $0.01385
Sonnet 5 $0.00554 $0.00554
Haiku 4.5 $0.00277 $0.00277

Measured 10d ago against content hash 1f9b30f839fb, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

RivalSearchMCP CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Project Overview

RivalSearchMCP is an MCP server providing 9 specialized tools for web research, content discovery, and analysis. Built on FastMCP, it offers multi-engine search (Yahoo/DuckDuckGo), website traversal, scientific research, and AI-enhanced research workflows. Ships with Claude Code Agent Skills for standalone CLI usage.

  • 100% free: No API keys required for core functionality
  • Dual deployment: Hosted service at https://RivalSearchMCP.fastmcp.app/mcp or local development
  • Transport modes: stdio (default, for CLI/IDE) or HTTP (production via ENVIRONMENT=production)

Development Commands

The project uses uv for dependency management and the fastmcp CLI for running the server. Configuration lives in fastmcp.json (source / environment / deployment) and pyproject.toml.

Setup & Running

# Install all dependencies (prod + dev) into a uv-managed venv
uv sync --extra dev

# Set up pre-commit hooks
uv run pre-commit install

# Run server (auto-detects fastmcp.json)
fastmcp run

# Run with stdio transport (for MCP clients / IDEs)
fastmcp run --transport stdio

# Run with HTTP transport (production)
fastmcp run --transport http --host 0.0.0.0 --port 8000

# Inspect server's tools/resources/prompts
fastmcp inspect

# Launch MCP Inspector UI for interactive testing
fastmcp dev inspector

Testing

# Run all tests
uv run pytest

# Run specific test file
uv run pytest tests/test_web_search.py

# Run specific test function
uv run pytest tests/test_web_search.py::test_function_name

# Run with coverage report
uv run pytest --cov=src --cov-report=term-missing

# Verbose with short traceback
uv run pytest -v --tb=short

Code Quality

# Format code
uv run black src/ tests/

# Sort imports
uv run isort src/ tests/

# Lint with auto-fix
uv run ruff check --fix src/ tests/

# Type checking
uv run mypy src/

# Run all pre-commit hooks
uv run pre-commit run --all-files

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
