gx-mcp-server: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

gx-mcp-server AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from davidf9999/gx-mcp-server. It costs 417 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A server that connects AI clients to Great Expectations, a tool for checking whether data meets defined rules. It provides data-validation functions through the Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI tools to call external capabilities.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to run Great Expectations validation through command-line, standard input/output, HTTP, or an inspection interface.
Why use it?
It gives AI clients a consistent way to run data checks without adding a separate web framework.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00417 $0.00417
Opus 5.5 $0.00167 $0.00167
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00083 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00042 $0.00042

Measured 2mo ago against content hash 93430c5bc32b, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-10-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

gx-mcp-server AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 2mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What it actually says

Instructions for AI agents

This repository hosts the Great Expectations MCP Server – a modern MCP server that exposes Great Expectations data-validation capabilities.

Architecture

Modern MCP Server (post-refactor):

  • Pure MCP server using FastMCP framework (no FastAPI dependency)
  • UV package manager with pyproject.toml
  • Multiple transport modes: STDIO, HTTP, Inspector
  • CLI interface: uv run python -m gx_mcp_server

Development Workflow

Setup

# Install dependencies
uv sync

Testing

# Run all tests
uv run pytest

# Test end-to-end functionality with examples
python scripts/run_examples.py

Code Quality

# Before committing
uv run pre-commit run --all-files
uv run pytest

# Type checking (relaxed rules for development flexibility)
uv run mypy gx_mcp_server/

Server Commands

STDIO mode (for AI clients):

uv run python -m gx_mcp_server

HTTP mode (for testing):

uv run python -m gx_mcp_server --http

Inspector mode (development):

uv run python -m gx_mcp_server --inspect

Key Files

  • gx_mcp_server/__main__.py – CLI entry point
  • gx_mcp_server/server.py – Server factory
  • gx_mcp_server/tools/ – MCP tool implementations
  • examples/basic_roundtrip.py – working example
  • pyproject.toml – UV package configuration

Notes for Agents

  • The profiler=True flag in create_suite is deprecated by Great Expectations 1.5+. Create empty suites and add expectations manually.
  • Examples are excluded from strict type checking; relax mypy warnings accordingly.
  • All datasets and validation results are ephemeral unless you switch to --storage-backend sqlite:///path/to/db.
Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
