gx-mcp-server: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

gx-mcp-server CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from davidf9999/gx-mcp-server. It costs 969 tokens per session, scanned C, original, MIT.

A set of project instructions for GX MCP Server, including setup commands, server modes, testing, and code-quality checks. MCP is a standard connection that lets AI clients use external tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when developing, testing, or running GX MCP Server with Python, including its standard-input, HTTP, or inspection modes.
Why use it?
It gives the coding agent the exact project workflow for installing dependencies, running the server, and checking changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00969 $0.00969
Opus 5 $0.00485 $0.00485
Sonnet 5 $0.00194 $0.00194
Haiku 4.5 $0.00097 $0.00097

Measured 7d ago against content hash af0a37406921, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-07, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade C, and why

gx-mcp-server CLAUDE.md scanned grade C with 2 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 7d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Development Commands

Installation and Setup

# Install uv package manager (if not already installed)
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

# Install project with dependencies
uv sync

# Install pre-commit hooks
uv run pre-commit install

Running the Server

The server can be run in different modes using the --transport argument. The default transport is stdio.

When using Docker, the transport can be controlled with the MCP_MODE environment variable, which defaults to stdio.

# STDIO mode (for AI clients like Claude Desktop)
uv run python -m gx_mcp_server

# HTTP mode (for web-based clients)
uv run python -m gx_mcp_server --http

# Development mode with MCP Inspector (testing UI)
uv run python -m gx_mcp_server --inspect

Testing

uv run pytest # Run all tests
uv run pytest tests/test_datasets.py # Run specific test file
uv run pytest tests/test_expectations.py
uv run pytest tests/test_validation.py

# Run end-to-end examples
python scripts/run_examples.py

Code Quality

uv run ruff format . # Format code and sort imports
uv run ruff check . --fix # Lint and fix issues
uv run mypy gx_mcp_server # Type checking
uv run pre-commit run --all-files # Run pre-commit hooks

Development Workflow

# Add new dependency
uv add package-name

# Add development dependency
uv add --dev package-name

# Update dependencies

# Run commands in the virtual environment
uv run python script.py

Architecture Overview

This is a Great Expectations MCP Server that exposes Great Expectations functionality through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The server provides data validation capabilities as MCP tools for LLM agents.

Core Components

MCP Server (gx_mcp_server/__init__.py & gx_mcp_server/server.py):

  • Main MCP server instance using FastMCP framework
  • Supports both STDIO and HTTP transports
  • Client-agnostic design works with any MCP-compatible LLM agent

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
