dcc-mcp-blender: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

dcc-mcp-blender CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-blender. It costs 657 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A setup guide for connecting Claude Desktop or another Anthropic API client to Blender through an MCP server, so it can call Blender tools over HTTP.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it to configure the Blender connection, understand which tools load first, and test calls such as getting scene information or listing objects.
Why use it?
It explains the configuration and progressive loading steps needed for Claude to discover and use Blender tools. This avoids guessing which settings, files, or startup steps are required.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00657 $0.00657
Opus 5 $0.00329 $0.00329
Sonnet 5 $0.00131 $0.00131
Haiku 4.5 $0.00066 $0.00066

Security

Grade A, and why

dcc-mcp-blender CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

What This Project Does

dcc-mcp-blender embeds an MCP Streamable HTTP server directly inside Blender. Claude Desktop (or any Anthropic API client using MCP) can call 200+ Blender tools over HTTP without any external gateway process.

Claude Desktop Configuration

Add to claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "blender": {
      "url": "http://127.0.0.1:9765/mcp"
    }
  }
}

File locations:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

Restart Claude Desktop after editing.

Progressive Loading — Important for Claude

By default, dcc-mcp-blender starts with a minimal set of built-in tools active:

  • execute_python, execute_script_file, get_blender_info
  • get_scene_info, get_session_info, list_objects
  • search_tools, list_skills, load_skill

All other skills appear as __skill__<name> stubs. When Claude needs a tool from an unloaded skill, it should:

  1. Call load_skill("blender-animation") to expand the skill.
  2. Then call the desired tool (e.g., blender_animation__set_keyframe).

This keeps the initial tools/list small and fast for Claude to parse.

Claude-Specific Tips

  • Viewport feedback: Ask Claude to call capture_viewport after geometry changes. The result is a base64-encoded PNG that Claude can "see" in the conversation.
  • Cancellation: Claude can send notifications/cancelled for long renders. Skill scripts that poll check_blender_cancelled() will exit cleanly.
  • Code execution: Prefer search_skillsload_skill → typed tools with inputSchema. Use execute_python only when no skill covers the task (bulk in-Blender loops, bpy API gaps, one-offs). Operators can refuse it with DCC_MCP_BLENDER_DISABLE_EXECUTE_PYTHON=1 or DCC_MCP_BLENDER_DISABLE_ARBITRARY_SCRIPT=1.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
