dcc-mcp-houdini: Instructions file for Gemini CLI

GEMINI.md

dcc-mcp-houdini GEMINI.md is an instructions file for Gemini CLI from dcc-mcp/dcc-mcp-houdini. It costs 416 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

A setup and usage guide for connecting Google Gemini to dcc-mcp-houdini. Houdini is 3D software for creating visual effects, and MCP lets an AI agent call its tools.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when configuring Gemini with Houdini over MCP, automating Houdini networks, managing look-development materials, capturing the viewport, or running pipeline tasks.
Why use it?
It explains the connection endpoint and gives workflow guidance for building node networks, materials, viewport checks, and pipelines in Houdini.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00416 $0.00416
Opus 5 $0.00208 $0.00208
Sonnet 5 $0.00083 $0.00083
Haiku 4.5 $0.00042 $0.00042

Security

Grade A, and why

dcc-mcp-houdini GEMINI.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 9d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

GEMINI.md — Google Gemini / Vertex AI Integration Guide

Gemini-specific integration notes for dcc-mcp-houdini. For the full project map, see AGENTS.md.

What This Project Does

dcc-mcp-houdini embeds an MCP Streamable HTTP server directly inside SideFX Houdini. Gemini (via an MCP-compatible client or custom integration) can discover and invoke 180+ Houdini tools across 30 skill packages over HTTP.

Integration Setup

If your Gemini client supports MCP over HTTP, configure:

Gateway endpoint: http://127.0.0.1:9765/mcp
Protocol: MCP Streamable HTTP (2025-03-26 spec)

For multi-instance gateway mode:

Endpoint: http://127.0.0.1:9765/mcp

Gemini-Specific Tips

  • Code-first workflows: Gemini excels at generating structured Houdini networks. Ask it to build complete SOP chains with houdini_nodes__create_nodeconnect_nodescook_node.
  • Lookdev & materials: Gemini's structured output handling makes it ideal for houdini-lookdev chains — set material parameters, save/load presets.
  • Viewport capture: Feed capture_viewport base64 PNGs back to Gemini for visual state verification.
  • Pipeline automation: Use houdini-pipeline skills for shot packaging and scene validation workflows.

Quick Test Prompts

"Create a camera and a three-point lighting setup" "List all materials in the scene and export their presets" "Import an alembic cache from /path/to/file.abc" "Validate the scene and collect all dependencies"

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
