Why use it?
They give the coding agent the project’s architecture, commands, testing expectations, and file layout in one place.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01218 $0.01218
Opus 5 $0.00609 $0.00609
Sonnet 5 $0.00244 $0.00244
Haiku 4.5 $0.00122 $0.00122

Measured 10d ago against content hash d56198abdf69, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-10, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

mcp-searxng-local AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 10d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Makes network callslowCapability

Not a fault in itself. Listed so you know the mod talks to something, and to what.

- SearXNG must be running (`docker compose up -d`) for tools to work. Health check: `curl -s "http://localhost:4000/search?q=test&format=json"`.

Project Overview

MCP server for local web search via SearXNG — zero API keys, zero cost, 100% local. Exposes 3 tools: web_search, web_search_advanced, web_fetch.

Tech Stack

  • Runtime: Node.js >= 20
  • Language: TypeScript (strict, ESM)
  • MCP SDK: @modelcontextprotocol/sdk v1
  • Validation: Zod v3
  • HTTP: axios (SearXNG API), native fetch (web_fetch)
  • HTML parsing: cheerio
  • Tests: vitest (48 tests)
  • Backend: SearXNG (Docker) + Valkey (cache)
  • Env loading: dotenv (.env files auto-loaded in entry points)

Build & Test

npm run build # tsc → dist/
npm run typecheck # tsc --noEmit
npx vitest run # 48 tests
npm run dev # tsx watch (development)
npm start # node dist/index.js (production)

Always run npm run build && npx vitest run before committing.

Key Architecture Decisions

  • stdio is primary transport (compatible with all MCP clients). HTTP via src/http.ts for remote access.
  • Unified handler: web_search and web_search_advanced share the same registerSearchTool() function in webSearch.ts. _advanced is a hint to the LLM to use filters more carefully.
  • All user-facing strings in English. Tool descriptions, error messages, Zod .describe(), log messages — everything the user/LLM sees is EN.
  • Identifiers in English. Function names, variable names, types, interfaces.
  • Cache: LRU in-memory (100 entries, 5min TTL). SearXNG also caches via Valkey.
  • Retry: withRetry() with exponential backoff + jitter. 3 retries for SearXNG, 2 for web_fetch.
  • Rate limit handling: Auto-fallback to public SearXNG instances when all local engines are unresponsive. Configured via SEARXNG_FALLBACK_URLS env var.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
