claude-tab-watcher

zsh plugin for iTerm2 + Claude Code. Colors the iTerm2 tab amber when Claude is waiting on the user, blue while it's working, and resets on exit. Also fires a clickable macOS notification that focuses the right tab.

Architecture

Three moving parts:

claude() shell wrapper (lib/wrapper.zsh) — shadows the claude binary. On launch it writes a per-session env file to ${CLAUDE_TAB_WATCHER_REGISTRY:-~/.claude-tab-watcher}/<ITERM_SESSION_ID>.env containing the tty path, cwd, pid. On exit it resets the tab and removes the registry entry. This is the only reliable way to clean up because no SessionEnd hook is consistent across Claude Code versions.
Hook scripts (hooks/on-waiting.sh, hooks/on-working.sh) — registered in ~/.claude/settings.json by lib/install.zsh. They read the per-session env file (Claude Code inherits ITERM_SESSION_ID from the parent shell), then write OSC 6 tab-color escapes directly to the saved tty so they work even though Claude captures hook stdout. on-waiting.sh also fires terminal-notifier with -execute pointing at bin/ctw-focus <sid>.
bin/ctw-focus — AppleScript helper. Activates iTerm2 and selects the session whose unique id matches the UUID portion of ITERM_SESSION_ID (wN:tM:UUID → take the suffix after the last colon).

PermissionRequest is the dedicated event for in-terminal yes/no tool permission prompts ("Do you want to proceed?"). Notification coverage of those prompts is undocumented/inconsistent, so we hook both.

Each hook entry carries a _ctw: "claude-tab-watcher" tag so re-install and uninstall can find/remove only our entries without clobbering the user's other hooks. jq is required for the merge.
