maui-labs: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/instructions/dependencies.instructions.md

maui-labs dependencies.instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from dotnet/maui-labs. It costs 857 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for auditing JavaScript package dependencies and their software supply chain. A supply chain is the set of third-party packages and build tools that code depends on.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding, removing, or updating npm dependencies in the repository. They specify the audit command, its exit meanings, and the conditions that must be resolved before review.
Why use it?
A vulnerable or unverified dependency can reach users or run with access to repository credentials. The instructions require checks for advisories, missing lockfiles, and unregistered projects before a pull request.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is dotnet/maui-labs's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on maui-labs itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything maui-labs configures →

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is node eng/scripts/audit-npm.mjs.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00857 $0.00857
Opus 5.5 $0.00343 $0.00343
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00171 $0.00171
Haiku 4.5 $0.00086 $0.00086

Security

Grade A, and why

maui-labs dependencies.instructions.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Dependencies and Supply Chain

This repo ships. JavaScript here is not throwaway tooling — the DevFlow Inspector client and VS Code host are packaged and distributed, so a vulnerable transitive dependency reaches users.

Non-negotiable: audit before you open the PR

If your change adds, removes, or updates any npm dependency — including an indirect change caused by regenerating a lockfile — run this before opening the PR:

node eng/scripts/audit-npm.mjs

It audits every npm project in the repo and verifies each is registered in .github/dependabot.yml:

Exit Meaning
0 Every project verified clean
1 high/critical advisories, an unregistered project, or a missing lockfile
2 A project could not be checked against the advisory database

All three must be resolved before the PR goes up. If you are offline, --allow-unverified downgrades exit 2 to a warning — but CI never passes that flag, so an unverifiable project still fails there.

Do not skip this because "it's only a devDependency". devDependencies still execute on developer machines and CI runners with repo credentials in scope, and they still land in package-lock.json, which is what advisory scanners read.

If it reports vulnerabilities

cd <reported-directory>
npm audit fix # add --force ONLY if you then verify the build and tests still pass
npm ci && npm test # confirm the fix did not break anything

Commit the updated package-lock.json. Remediation is required — there is no "document it and move on" path, because the check stays red and would block every later dependency PR. If no upstream fix exists, raise it with a maintainer and agree an explicit decision (drop the package, vendor a patch, or consciously change the threshold); do not leave the PR red and unexplained.

If it says a project "could NOT be verified"

That is not a pass, and it exits 2. npm audit exits non-zero both for real findings and for an unreachable registry, so an unverified project means you have no signal at all. Re-run once you have network access.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
