dhis2-mcp CLAUDE.md

dhis2-mcp CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from Dradebo/dhis2-mcp. It costs 706 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Development instructions for an MCP server that connects AI tools to DHIS2, a platform used to manage health data and reporting. They describe the TypeScript structure, DHIS2 API client, authentication, and project commands.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when working on DHIS2 resources, API requests, authentication, MCP tools, or the project's build, development, linting, and Jest test commands.
Why use it?
They explain both the external system and the repository's main components, helping agents make changes without overlooking the required build, type, lint, or test checks.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00706 $0.00706
Opus 5 $0.00353 $0.00353
Sonnet 5 $0.00141 $0.00141
Haiku 4.5 $0.00071 $0.00071

Security

Grade A, and why

dhis2-mcp CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 5d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Development Commands

  • Build: npm run build - Compiles TypeScript to JavaScript in dist/
  • Development: npm run dev - Runs TypeScript compiler in watch mode
  • Type Check: npm run type-check - Validates TypeScript without emitting files
  • Lint: npm run lint - Runs ESLint on all TypeScript files in src/
  • Test: npm run test - Runs Jest test suite
  • Start: npm run start - Runs the compiled MCP server from dist/index.js

Architecture Overview

This is a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides tools for DHIS2 development and management. The architecture follows a modular pattern:

Core Components

  • MCP Server (src/index.ts): Main entry point that sets up the MCP server using @modelcontextprotocol/sdk. Handles tool registration and request routing through stdio transport.

  • DHIS2 Client (src/dhis2-client.ts): HTTP client wrapper around the DHIS2 Web API using Axios. Provides typed interfaces for DHIS2 resources (DataElement, OrganisationUnit, etc.) and handles authentication via basic auth.

  • Tool Definitions (src/tools/index.ts): Defines MCP tool schemas for DHIS2 operations. Each tool specifies input parameters and descriptions for the MCP protocol.

Key Patterns

  • Lazy Initialization: DHIS2Client is created only after dhis2_configure tool is called with connection details
  • Tool Registration: Tools are dynamically registered after successful DHIS2 connection
  • Error Handling: All DHIS2 API calls wrapped with try-catch and meaningful error messages
  • Type Safety: Comprehensive TypeScript interfaces for all DHIS2 API responses

DHIS2 Integration Points

The MCP currently supports these DHIS2 Web API endpoints:

  • /api/me - Connection testing
  • /api/system/info - System information
  • /api/dataElements - Data element metadata
  • /api/organisationUnits - Organization unit hierarchy
  • /api/analytics - Analytics engine queries
  • /api/dataValues - Data value CRUD operations
  • /api/dataSets - Data set metadata

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
