claude-toolkit: Instructions file for Claude Code

CLAUDE.md

claude-toolkit CLAUDE.md is an instructions file for Claude Code from dwmkerr/claude-toolkit. It costs 236 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Development instructions for Claude Toolkit, including rules for testing and documenting skills and commands. A skill is an instruction package that an assistant selects for a type of task; a slash command is invoked directly by a user.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use them when adding or changing skills, writing skill-routing tests, adding slash commands, or updating the toolkit's README.
Why use it?
They help maintainers verify that skills trigger for the right prompts and keep the project's README and test files up to date. This reduces accidental routing and undocumented additions.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.00236 $0.00236
Opus 5 $0.00118 $0.00118
Sonnet 5 $0.00047 $0.00047
Haiku 4.5 $0.00024 $0.00024

Measured 6d ago against content hash 96bfcdb968c6, method: parsed. Prices are Anthropic first-party input rates as of 2026-09-06, from the pricing page.

Security

Grade A, and why

claude-toolkit CLAUDE.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 6d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

Skill Tests

When adding or modifying skills, you MUST add or update the corresponding skill-tests.yaml file adjacent to the skill's SKILL.md. These tests verify that Claude routes prompts to the correct skill.

Example plugins/toolkit/skills/<skill-name>/skill-tests.yaml:

skill: toolkit:<skill-name>
model: haiku

tests:
  - id: positive-test
prompt: "a prompt that should trigger this skill"
    should_trigger: true

  - id: negative-test
prompt: "a prompt that should not trigger this skill"
    should_trigger: false

Tests run in CI via the skill-test-action.

When adding a new skill, also add an entry to README.md (both the TOC and the Skills section).

Commands

Commands (slash commands) don't need skill tests — they're invoked explicitly, not routed by description. When adding a new command, add an entry to README.md (both the TOC and the Commands section under the relevant plugin).

Changes

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
