Claude Code readsCLAUDE.md(which contains the full contributor guide); this file provides the essential subset for all other agents. Since v2.1.277 Claude Code can read AGENTS.md as well, via the built-inagents-md@builtinplugin — but its default mode only falls back to AGENTS.md in projects that have noCLAUDE.md, so in this repoCLAUDE.mdstays authoritative.
