simplesign: Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

.github/copilot-instructions.md

simplesign copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file for GitHub Copilot from eupassarin/simplesign. It costs 1,238 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Project instructions for using SimpleSign, a .NET library that digitally signs, checks, and inspects PDF documents. Its signatures follow a European standard for advanced PDF signatures, and it also covers Brazilian public-key infrastructure.

In plain words
What is it for?
Use it when implementing PDF signing, signature validation, signature metadata inspection, deferred signing, batch signing, Brazilian PKI support, or HTML-to-PDF conversion.
Why use it?
It tells a coding agent which package and usage pattern to choose instead of making assumptions about PDF signing or validation.

Instructions file for GitHub Copilot

Written for GitHub Copilot: a Copilot instructions file.

This is eupassarin/simplesign's own configuration. It tells GitHub Copilot how to work on simplesign itself, so it is not a mod to install elsewhere. Copy it as a starting point and replace the rules that are about this project. Everything simplesign configures →

Needs its repository: it runs a file that does not travel with it, so clone the repository first. The line is simplesign batch-sign ./documents/ --cert mycert.pfx --parallel 8.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01238 $0.01238
Opus 5.5 $0.00495 $0.00495
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00248 $0.00248
Haiku 4.5 $0.00124 $0.00124

Security

Grade A, and why

simplesign copilot-instructions.md scanned grade A with 1 finding against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 13d ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Copilot Instructions for SimpleSign

What is SimpleSign?

SimpleSign is a .NET library for PAdES (PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures). It signs, validates, and inspects PDF documents following ETSI EN 319 142 standards. All cryptography uses System.Security.Cryptography — no third-party crypto libraries.

When to Use SimpleSign

Use SimpleSign when the user needs to:

  • Digitally sign PDF documents (PAdES)
  • Validate existing PDF signatures
  • Inspect signature metadata
  • Implement deferred signing (hash on server, sign on client)
  • Sign documents in batch
  • Work with ICP-Brasil / Gov.br Brazilian PKI

Package to Install

# Most common — PDF signing & validation
dotnet add package SimpleSign.PAdES

# Brazilian PKI
dotnet add package SimpleSign.Brasil

# HTML to PDF (no signing)
dotnet add package SimpleSign.HtmlToPdf

Preferred Patterns

Signing — always use the fluent builder:

using SimpleSign.PAdES;

byte[] signedPdf = await SimpleSigner
    .Document(pdfBytes)
    .WithCertificate(certificate)
    .WithTimestamp("http://timestamp.digicert.com")  // recommended
    .WithLtv()                                        // recommended for archival
    .SignAsync();

Validation — use PdfSignatureValidator:

using SimpleSign.PAdES.Validation;

var validator = new PdfSignatureValidator(new ValidationOptions
{
    CheckRevocation = true,
    TrustSystemRoots = true,
});

var results = await validator.ValidateAsync(stream);

Inspection (fast, no crypto):

using SimpleSign.PAdES.Inspection;
var info = await PdfSignatureInspector.InspectAsync(stream);

Deferred signing (web apps, mobile, HSM):

var prepared = await DeferredSigner.PrepareAsync(pdfBytes, cert);
// Send prepared.HashToSign to client
byte[] signedPdf = await DeferredSigner.CompleteAsync(prepared.SessionData, clientSignature);

ICP-Brasil Validation

using SimpleSign.Brasil;

var validator = new IcpBrasilChainValidator();
var result = await validator.ValidateAsync(certificate);
Console.WriteLine($"Policy: {result.DetectedPolicy}");  // AD_RB, AD_RT, AD_RV, AD_RC, AD_RA

// CPF/CNPJ extraction
var (cpf, cnpj) = IcpBrasilChainValidator.ExtractCpfCnpj(cert);

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.

simplesign copilot-instructions.md is an instructions file published in the GitHub repository eupassarin/simplesign (18 stars, last pushed yesterday), licensed MIT. It adds 1,238 tokens to every session, about $0.0050 per session on Opus 5.5. A static security scan graded it A with 1 finding (makes network calls). No closer match exists in the catalogue, so it is treated as the original; first seen 2026-10-14.
