memex: Instructions file for Codex

AGENTS.md

memex AGENTS.md is an instructions file for Codex, OpenCode from evan-moon/memex. It costs 1,902 tokens per session, scanned A, original, MIT.

Repository instructions for Memex, a personal notes system that stores notes in SQLite and supports meaning-based search using text embeddings. They describe its command-line tool, MCP server, database, model cache, and backup behavior.

In plain words
What is it for?
Understanding Memex's architecture, data locations, search components, and instructions for working with its command-line and MCP interfaces.
Why use it?
They give a coding agent the project context and operating rules needed to modify or use Memex safely, including how its database is protected during schema changes.

Token cost

What it costs to keep this loaded

Counted locally with the o200k_base tokenizer, which is exact for GPT models; Claude uses its own tokenizer and its counts differ. Treat this as one consistent yardstick across the catalogue rather than a bill. Prices are per million input tokens.

ModelPer sessionOnce invoked
Fable 5.1 $0.01902 $0.01902
Opus 5.5 $0.00761 $0.00761
Sonnet 5.5 $0.00380 $0.00380
Haiku 4.5 $0.00190 $0.00190

Security

Grade A, and why

memex AGENTS.md scanned grade A with 0 findings against 26 rules in 11 categories — prompt injection, anti-refusal, data exfiltration, privilege escalation, supply chain, agent snooping, system-prompt leakage, SSRF and excessive agency — measured 1mo ago.

A static scan of the body, not an audit. Every finding is printed with the line that produced it so you can judge whether it matters here. A mod is markdown that instructs an agent; that is exactly why what it instructs is worth reading.

Nothing flagged

None of the 26 patterns this scan looks for appear in this file: no shell pipes, no recursive deletes, no credential paths, no hidden text, no instruction-override or anti-refusal phrasing, no agent-config snooping. That is not a guarantee, it is the absence of the things that are checkable.

DB lives at ~/.memex/memex.db. Model cache at ~/.memex/models/.

openDb snapshots the database to memex.db.bak-<YYYYMMDD-HHMMSS> whenever a schema migration is pending and the vault is not empty, then keeps the newest three. It uses VACUUM INTO rather than copying the file, because the MCP server and the CLI are both attached in WAL mode and a filesystem copy can be torn mid-transaction — if you ever copy the DB by hand, take -wal with it. A snapshot that fails does not stop the database from opening; memex stats prints how many backups are kept and when the newest was taken.

What memex is

memex defines memory explicitly so it can be retrieved correctly without anyone reading or maintaining it.

There is no window, no editor, and no screen. The reader is always a model, reaching memex through MCP. That is the constraint every design decision answers to:

  • A note's layer and sections are declared at write time, because that is the only moment the writer knows how long the thing stays true. Nothing downstream has to guess.
  • A correction states what it corrects (amends / amends_kind / invalidates), so every surface that returns the old note carries the fix. Nobody has to notice and clean up.
  • A state note names its evidence (derives_from), so it can be rechecked by comparison rather than by someone rereading the vault.
  • Signals and inferences are deterministic. They are not a backlog for a person to clear; they are material the retrieval path uses.

What this file has done since we first saw it

Hashed on every crawl. A supply-chain change to an agent config is a question of when, not whether, so the history is kept rather than the latest state alone.
